How does a guy with arguably 5 classic albums (illmatic, it was written, stillmatic, lost tapes, life is good) have bad beat selection? lmao

Jay-z has numerous poorly produced albums and no one says anything lol


Also nas is like 50 lol im not expecting a 5 mic album from him lol im just happy he's droppin some classics SONGS And adding to his catalogue.

Songs like deat row east, pressure, rare, wu for the children, Beef,Reminsce, ultrablack,etc are classic Nas records

As insane, resentful, and passive aggressive as Pete Rock may be, and has been over the years, the fact that he has a legitimate argument for being the greatest producer to ever put his hands on a beat machine gives him a cachet on this topic that none of us, Nas, or Hit-Boy will ever have.

If he were to question Nas's pen game then that's a different story. But to argue Pete doesn't have any insight to speak on what backdrop would bring the best out of an MC, even one he hadn't worked with in decades, is just foolish. You literally could count the people more qualified to speak on this than Pete Rock on one hand.

Same thing I said. If anyone has insight into what quality Hip Hop is or sounds like, it's going to be someone like Pete. Regardless of how I feel about his personality, there are very few producers whose ear I trust more than Pete Rock's. Problem with dudes today, is they don’t respect the actual legends enough. Salaam caught a great deal of hate. He doesn't belong to purists. Im fact, he gets glossed over when people discuss Hip Hop producers in general. Out of all the producers ya'll claim Nas should go back to, has "organic" chemistry with, etc. Why hasn't he been mentioned? Certainly "Made You Look" is one of Nas's most legendary songs and one could easily say, Salaam is one of the producers Nas has had the most chemistry with.

In regard to No I.D., I can pull up the 2014 threads where people wanted him far away from a Nas album. Then Jay dropped 4:44 and people were back on the No I.D. train.

Pete Rock is dope producer still and a legend, but salty as fukk. Has been for a long time.

Just goes to show how good of a song The World Is Yours is. That was literally the only Nas song for twenty five years, and Pete speaks ill on Nas with a lot of comfortability.

Which makes sense cuz Nas was in his prime back then. But it’s also probably because of the diversity of producers too.

I’m tempted to revisit SD, Gods Son & Untitled and compare all of the ‘bad beats and gimmicks’ albums against the Hit Boy stuff.

I just feel like people are trying to say he’s unauthentic cause he didn’t come into the game like that. But since the Chauncey Hollis tape I feel like he’s shown it

I think another aspect is that Hit-Boy is good at so many different styles of production that he can seem like a chameleon at times without truly having his own super signature style. If you dig deeper with (at least the knowledgeable) cats that criticize Hit-Boy, that usually seems to be one of the main pillars of their crtiticsm.

Low key I kind of agree, but I kind of think his signature style is being able to basically do any style. He can do the Just Blaze/Bink style. He can do Preemo or Pete style. He can do Dre or Daz style. He can do Alchemist or Madlib style. he can do 9th Wonder style. And they almost never sound below average. No matter whose style he's doing, it's almost always respectable or pretty damn good.

When I heard Death Row East is really when I started thinking that he can make a beat to sound like any style.

I fukked with the Art of It on LT 2 played it a lot in 2019....that was shyt was also hella distored and unmixed and I KNOW motherfukkers would kill Pete for only giving Nas just a loop of the opening of Uptwon Anthem...matter of fact I saw it when the reviews came in

I can't post a source on this but from someone I trust that's usually spot on, apparently It Never Ends is from a weekend where Nas and Al made 3 songs a few years ago, and It Mever Ends is the drumless one and the one that Nas wanted to drop on LT2. I disliked it when it came out. Still probably my least favorite joint in their catalogue together, but it's grown on me some the past few years.

I’m reading the thread now like what are people even asking for at this point?! Arguments are all over the place. Nas and Hit Boy worked initially because they exceeded even Nas fan’s expectations. Hearing that Nas was going to work with Hit boy damn near fresh off the Nasir disappointment was NOT GOOD initially. When theydropped the first Kings Disease and hit it out of the park, we were like They decided they were going to keep going and we were ok with it. Are we sure that people would’ve been the same way if he worked with this dream list that people are coming up with? I mean Madlib and Alc are my guys right now but would it be like this if it was Nas/Alc-Madlib? Alc is great with Boldy James but that duo ain’t moving the needle like they should.. People would just say Nas is on bad or sleepy beats or something. I say give us Nas/Hit until they can’t do it no more: people are literally saying Hitboy is diverse but they’re tired of the duo saying Nas need something different. I’m just literally confused.
