sounds like the song was released prior to clearing the sample and it was a hit. if that happens, steely dan had them over a barrel and forced them to agree to any terms they wanted.

They can't even perform the song last I heard. That along with Lord Tariq's album getting confiscated, it was a wrap for them.

what made them agree to those terms?

Was a white label record that blew up out of nowhere. White label records weren't really commercial or global smash hits, really just street shyt so no one cleared the sample but it blew up and by then it was too late. An uncleared sample entitles the original owners to 100% and they probably had to pay what the sample would have cost x 3 or they paid that money for the right to perform the song at shows.
