The Truth
It was extremely misguided and ill informed. He’s acting as if the problem lays at the feet of us, for wanting to get our foot in the door if it means ticking boxes

Meanwhile, data has shown that black candidates can be overqualified for a role and still be passed over for a less qualified white candidate.

The reason the Rooney Rule existed in the NFL
Is because black coaches were not even getting a chance to be interviewed. This happens across all hiring practices. Pharrell shouldn’t be pointing the finger at us saying “you should be hired on merit”, he should be pointing the finger at his bosses.
Ok bruh

I’m just saying, telling black folks to strive to be the best they can be, and better than the opposition, is not a bad message in my eyes..

Even if the game is rigged, we still have found ways to be the best or successful in different avenues and at different times. And those people did it by proving it. Now, work on bringing awareness to it and trying to un-rig it

Not worth arguing over to me though, so :yeshrug:

If you watch the video. He's very on point

I watched it, and there is nothing bad with it in a vacuum. He's just repeating the saying, "gotta work 2x harder to be seen as good as the average white person" in a different way; and to an extent, it's true in this society the higher up you go. You get less chances of fukking up whereas Dillon is given a large rope to mess up, and Dillon didn't need much in terms of education credentials.

The problem though is that Black folk can get swept up under the idea that this society is merit based so when they are criticized harshly or rejected more, they internalize the overly harsh criticisms and rejections instead of understanding that this society judges us far more negatively.

Quotas were introduced in the first place BECAUSE of discrimination, not due to being under qualified compared to our white counterparts.
I could see this pov if you looked at what he said strictly from a cynical pov. Nothing he said came off as blaming black people or finger pointing though.

It’s not as if the cynicism isn’t warranted.

I’m also a competitive dude too, so he ain’t saying shyt to me :yeshrug:

Finished on top of damn near every class I went to and applied myself in. I just agree with being the best or at least striving to be the best at what you can control

I was also taught that because I’m black I need to be the best or close to it. I guess it wasn’t a common teaching

RELY ON DEI HANDOUTS SINCE
DEI wasn’t giving handouts to begin with my nikka. It’s not involved in the hiring process whatsoever. And DEI itself is more involved the other protected classes minus race with the exception of genetic info. The most frequently alleged basis of complaint was reprisal/retaliation, followed by age, then disability in the public sector.

Please look at the evidence:

Almost every 7/11 store in the hood is owned by Asians or Arabs.

The black hair market is cornered by Asians.

In Cali, Texas, Florida and other states, you’ll struggle to get even an interview for most jobs unless you’re bilingual.

Is all of this by design or is it because black people just don’t work hard enough? I guess we should ignore redlining, freeways being built directly by black businesses, gentrification, blockbusting etc.

All of that is just a thing of a past. I can’t believe so many of y’all are being so obtuse.

Like Chris Rock said, true equality is when a black President as equally as stupid as George Bush can be elected. Obama had to be perfect. Trump just had to be white and racist.
