Breh the Neptunes didn't start that 4 count shyt until the mid 2000s. That FamLay track was a bit before then.

i used to do the same thing when making beats

just the beat for 4 bars... then bring in the melody for 4 bars.. then full beat after the 8 bar intro

i don't know why, i just liked the build up that way

This is a hip hop thing, cats been doing this shyt forever. I think Pharell has used it because it's something a lot of sample based producers have done in the past and it gives that same feeling to his beats.

I was listening to D Nice album yesterday after the Combat Jack interview and I heard it on there at least once in the few songs I played in the whip. It's not some Neptunes only thing or something they only did after a certain year.
