As far as "making songs" goes, that is an overused cliche. most of the industry recycle the same 12 bars over an over again. They might can't make a radio friendly jingle, but they can't put their soul on tracks like very few.

Reign Man, Jakk Frost, Kre Forch, Journalist, Quilly, Cyssero, Chic, Young Hot when he was still spittin, dudes have songs for days. You ask them to spit, and they will spit forever but they will have songs too. Check out their videos

The only people who think of philly as being in NY's shadow are people not from Philly..In Philly New York is rarely mentioned EVER. Unless it to go see some tourist shyt. Philly really stays with its own borders..which might be the problem.

I don't know how many times I have had to tell these people down here that same shyt. :ohlawd:
Only time I've ever even heard of that was when I moved from Philly, and it was from people who'd never been to either Philly nor NY. :snoop:

Yeah man shyt makes me mad sometimes..Im like these people know nothing...most people dont even know Philly is the 5th largest city in the states.. be quick to throw us in the same category as B-More or DC. Different culture different everything really...from NY and DC............. if ANYTHING we INFLUENCE Wilmington and Baltimore. Ever been there? They walk and talk like us.

the talent is there.

the industry basically boxed out all the hood dudes period except for the ones that's making dumb-dumb music. so naturally a city like philly gets left out in the cold.

the only reason meek got on was cuz of rick ross, whos like the only "young" black ceo making moves right now that's not on some str8 sellout chit.

everytime i asked someone about Philly it always came down to some crabs in a barrel response and that most can't make the proper transition from just rapping to making good songs.

Peedi should have been a star though.

no. the problem with some of the people responding to you is that theres a misconception on here that making good songs equates to making commercial radio jingles. im seeing a lot of that on this board regarding other rappers as well.

i love philly a lot. my girl is from there. my dad is from there. great city, love visiting. but somehow, some way, philly is terrible at producing musicians. i have played gigs in philly and they were chill but all the bands we played with were horrible. not sure why but it has always been that way. the punk scene is good but the bands are bad. as for the rappers, meek mill seems to be "the one" but he has a couple tracks (if that). make a song.

this is no PGH vs. PHL thing, i have mad love for philly but everyone there is :umad: all the time. no clue why, aside from having a colossal chip on their shoulders from being in NYC's shadow. and once again, not hating, NYC is fine but who cares about it. i live 6 hours from both and have had plenty of good times in both cities. shyt i will be in philly this weekend having a good old time.

Only people not from NYC or Philly think like thiz. Wtf are you talking about.

One thing with Philly is that we are too raw and real we don't know how to turn it off. Swizz was talking AR-AB but dudes like him... all they knkw is street life everybody live that street life here and it is not by choice majority of the time. You will never see a Lupe Fiasco or a Kendrick Lamar type of artist here in Philly. You have to be on the streets to be know here and if you aren't you have no place in Philly sad to say which is why the Roots are more loved in NYC than here.

I would say thats the difference between us and other cities. EVERYBODY here is about that street life. Its a gift and a curse though because a lot of times it doesnt allow for somebody to be comfortable expressing themselves musically in a way thats other than hood.

Philly nikkas is raw. Straight skills. And that is the problem. The thing that alot of ppl forget about NYC rappers in the 90s, is that almost all the talented MCs were also, extremely swagged out and had standout personalites. Or at least had a distinct character trait.

From KRS to Run DMC to LL to Slick Rick to Rakim to Nas to Biggie to Jay to Meth to Ghost to Rae to Mase to DMX to Cam etc. Ny nikkas have that natural flair about them. Philly is like New York without the swag and style and more emphasis on the skill and the streets.

Philly breeds some of the best rappers. We didn't capitalize on it though. I feel that because Philly is so close to New York, we can't shake that dependency and do for ourself. Rappers from here always talmbout they had to go to New York in the past to get on, when cities like Atlanta are 1/3 the size of Philly yet they carved out their own identity. Artists in Atlanta created their own ecosystem down there, so now they don't need New York for sh*t. In Philly, it's the opposite. Instead of making the city a hotbed for famous artists, writers and producers to flock to, we just rode up 95 to NYC.

No Limit and Cash Money sprung up out of New Orleans and got they deal....Those labels were self-grown. They didn't run to another city begging to get put on. Birdman wasn't answering to any New York nikkas, like Beans had to answer to Jay/Dame. They were selling 100,000s of albums in their city, already celebrities in their city, already bosses in their city and they made the industry pay attention to them. Philly has never done that for whatever reason :patrice: When you think about all of the known acts out of Philly, they were all off-shoots of a New York crew....like Philly is some satellite town....Cassidy/Eve under Yonkers nikkas, State Prop/Freeway/Beans under Brooklyn nikkas, Meek Mill went down south. Why can't a Cash Money Records get started here? Where the main star and his whole crew are from the city. Where the label is here and not New York. Where the group is their own independent brand (i.e. Young Money, Maybach Music, Rap-A-Lot) and not a subsidiary of a New York group (i.e. Rocafella/State Prop) :patrice:

We're just too close to NY to start our own. Every other independent movement isn't close to anything. Besides, all of the bank rolls are still in the streets. "______ was gonna start a label but he's currently doin 20"

All I know is when I heard Sigel on Andrenaline with Thought and Raw I was :blessed:
Yep, that was also the first tiime I heard of Sigel. I thought he would do more stuff with the Roots. Crazy how he moved from something like that to the Roc camp.
