Just because a city gotta lot of blacks that doesnt mean they gotta compete with NY. Little Rock is a city with many blacks and who do they have? Boston is far from a chocolate city but they still had the late Guru, Reks, Mr. Lif, Akrobatik, and Slaine

The city chemisty gotta lot to do with it.

We NEVER support our own.

You think about it B.I.G used to kick it in Philly tough.....Jay says he watches every battle/street rapper from Philly on youtube.

We typically more rugged, hard edge and blue collar than NY. Waaaay too rough around the edges. Even our mainstream dudes are gritty (minus Will Smith).

We simply do not support our own though because it's nice rappers all over Philly and as soon as someone mentions someone, some1 else will step up to say, yeah but my man nice too....smh

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
As far as "making songs" goes, that is an overused cliche. most of the industry recycle the same 12 bars over an over again. They might can't make a radio friendly jingle, but they can't put their soul on tracks like very few.

Reign Man, Jakk Frost, Kre Forch, Journalist, Quilly, Cyssero, Chic, Young Hot when he was still spittin, dudes have songs for days. You ask them to spit, and they will spit forever but they will have songs too. Check out their videos
you kinda going in circles... they might not be able to make radio friendly jingle................. and stop right there... that's all record companies care about.. that day where skills got you on is over.. done.. dead

that soulful, heartfelt songs are great.. and i mean that.. cause that's my genre of hip-hop that i love.. but that ain't gonna get you a deal.. everyone you named... no deals.. cassidy was even spitting that punchline rap until it was major label time.. then it was r. kelly and hotels and his own dance.. beans was a different time and jay loved him.. bleek don't even have as many songs with jay as beans..

sorry to say it but look at worldstar... there's soooooooooo many dope artists freestyling on radio that are hot.. that been around.. that post up songs that are hot.. that have bars, and subject matter and good music... but who gets the actual deal?? trinidad james, asap gang, etc...

meek spits too.. what happens when its major label release time... party songs.. hits.. club music

if you ain't making that in these days.. you are going nowhere

it's not that record companies don't care about lyrics and only want party songs , all they care about is making money. And If they see that you're an independent/unsigned artist who already has a solid fan-base(which usually means more money for them), those lables will be knocking at your door.

But yeah, Unfortunately, the truth is, the masses (esp. The younger crowd these days) don't give an iota of a fukk about lyrics or bars. Not like that anyways.

Its funny you say that about BIG. N Jay because
Nelly stayed in North Philly in Richard Allen with RAM squad before be blew.

T.I stayed in Philly before he really got popular because his manager was from Philly or had peoples out here.

Rick Ross brother use to be in Philly

Early New York rappers in the 80s had their first shot in Philly. I believe it is Lady B wbo gave half them dudes n chicks their first mainstream play before NY did. 80s rappers

Camron stayed in Philly and still be here sometimes but never in the known. He has a hair dresser in Yeadon and his two chicks live out Mt.Airy n West.

Philly influence a lot of people man. We can start trends but not our rap shyt smh.
