I've always been a huge Robert Townsend fan. But Meteor Man was a 90s movie with a 1970s overly sentimental vibe. Boyz in the Hood came out 2 years prior. Seriously, listen to that Church "Call to the altar" keyboard music playing in the background. It was pathetic and the worst aspect of Townsends filmmaking cliches.

Touche', but as somebody who thought Boyz was kinda meh and aged like dogshyt, I can easily watch Meteor Man in a heartbeat. Yes, the whole flick was a mess and a half with Townsend's overkill doing the most aspects, but this was a huge change of pace for black cinema at the time. Every flick had some sort of "gotta leave the hood", "BROTHERS GETTING SHOT IN A 1 TO 100000 MINUTE RADIUS" and other forms of traumatic porn. At least, this flick actually tried to break that stigma with delivering the same message.

For the time, yeah I agree the flick was a typical 90s cliche', but looking at it now....it was somewhat innovative compared to most black flicks at the time.

I never finished the movie, so Im not trying to judge it as a whole, just the clip you posted. You are correct, Boyz in the Hood aged poorly, but it used a subject completely ignored by the film industry. Meteor Man may be great, but many of the worst aspects of Townsend's filmmaking, and I view him as a Pioneer in black filmmaking, were showcased in first half of the movie. (Which is what I saw).
