The only program I think should be redone with more "socialist" leanings in this country is health care. Right now, my main gripe is for entrepreneurs and freelancers. If you make over 30k a year, but you don't work for an employer you're fukked in the "Obamacare" system. The plans are ultra expensive with high deductibles to boot. We claim we're a country that promotes innovators and small business, but when it comes to health care they're screwed. I also think there should be some type of incentive for staying in shape. I don't know how it would be done without causing an uproar though.
Our public school system is already "socialized" and the results are terrible. We throw more money per kid than any other country besides Switzerland and one or two other countries. Yet our results are poor. The cause of this is the bloated administrators sucking up the money and lack of accountability. That is one of the reasons people argue against socialism in the first place. Now you have people complaining about charter school when they're providing an alternative that has had some success. Why would you be against charter schools if you can show me a school with a few hundred students that are outperforming all the regular public schools in the area? You know why? It forces those teachers and admins in the crap schools to face the light.
The argument the crap schools make is charter schools just take all the good children. First off, how are we defining "good children" at such a young age? If this means they're choosing students with parents that are actually involved then maybe we can talk about solutions for others. In the German school system, they start weeding kids out by 3rd or 4th grade by their aptitudes. If you aren't cutting it, they will start giving you more vocational training. That needs to happen here. There is no point passing along a student who can't read or do math at the required level his grade demands. This is setting the kid up for failure when he gets out into the real world. It's the PC culture of "oh you can't be that mean to kids". Yes you need to be honest with them if they're messing up. Kids that disturb the class need to be dealt with in a stern manner. Not only are they messing it up for themselves, but they're a negative influence on the kids who actually want to learn. And you wonder why all the "good kids" are going to charters?
As far as colleges, yes they're overpriced. A big reason is the same as our k-12 schools which is the bloated administration sucking up the money. Again to use the German system, you don't see that. Also for that "free education" in German colleges you still have to pass tests to get in. We have community colleges here for a reason. If you don't QUALIFY for a 4 year college you should start at a community college. That will save you tons of money. Most community colleges usually have partnerships with the 4 year state schools to transfer after 2 years. What makes German schools cheap is the college life is really a no frills learning environment. You're not there to "hang out". All those big college football games, world class gyms, and all the other non essential aspects of college you can forget about. Are you ready for that reality? Also if you're majoring in History or some other liberal arts subject you need to be realistic about your job future. Unless you're going to go all the way through for a PHD, you're not going to be in demand without learning a skill.
Once you're out of school do you really want to be in a workforce where you aren't incentivized to do your best? Do any of you regularly go to the post office? If you're in a decent sized city you should know how slow dealing with them is. They know they're getting their check and pension and could care less about being efficient. They also know it's hard to get fired so that gives them all the more reason to coast on their jobs. Being black in the workplace could actually get worse under such a system. If there is no real career advancement then jobs totally become about power and control. Right now, people have the option to switch jobs when they feel like. Don't like your job, you can leave tomorrow for a higher paying one with a better boss. What happens when that ability is taken away? Applying for any job will end up like applying for Government jobs now. It will take you around a year or more of waiting just to hear back. I'm fine the way we are now.
