Targets like mass transit points are unlikely to occur. That happens in the movies because in the movies the writers give the 'bad guys' the motivations of a terrorist. To invoke terror, strike fear, etc.
What you have to remember is that regardless of what you call someone, their motivations fall in line with what they believe themselves to be, not what your government tells you they are.

The only way they would do what you are talking about is if they believe themselves to be terrorists. They do not. They see themselves as having goals, objectives, agendas... none of which are merely causing random commotion.
People fly planes into the world trade center, pentagon, etc... not walmart. "Bad Guys" blowing up stadiums like Bane or targeting civillians like the generic foreign dudes from Die Hard (any of them) is not how things happen. First thing would be to secure the border. Secondly, we need proactive protection against terrorism. Basically, our way of life would see drastic changes if they came here. But i feel it would unite us as it did with 9/11 but i feel a lot of ppl would blame the president for "stirring the hornets nest" and the eventual aftermath of an attack. That guy was very lucky.
