People in Binghamton, Cuse, Ithaca & Elmira were all sprung off Illmatic. Take it from an old head that was up there getting money.

from what i remember, there was a consensus among The Source when they first heard the tape that it should possibly be a 5 mic album and it was ultimately left up to Miss Info to choose if it would or not. the fact that they had only given i think 3 or 4 albums 5 mics in the past (technically 5 "broken records") and they were AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted, De La Soul Is Dead, One For All and Low End Theory i think. that means Illmatic had to live up to A LOT to make it a 5 mic. i'm sure an NY bias came into it but with the amount of artists over the years that have talked about it's influence it's safe to say it's a classic and DID change the game

Stop it fakket. Pac, Ghostface, Raekwon, Common, Jay Z, Elzhi among a bunch of other nikkasIt's only become "influential" amongst the 2000's era hipster backpacker rap scene. It's become a cult classic with them folks... Lupe, Immortal Technique and the like... It ain't influence no real nikkas in the game though.
Pac, Big, Cube, Face, Dre, Snoop, Bone and several others from that era released albums that were FAR FAR FAR FAAAAAAAR more influential than Illmatic.
It was supposedly soooooo influential but yet nobody had the damn album outside of a handful of New Yorkers
