to win more than 1 title in the NBA you have to have all-time greats, just goes with the territory

Pop gets credit from me for a few reasons: flawless matchups/rotations, scouting and prep. Keep in mind he used to be the Spurs GM, then hand picked RC Buford who is probably the best in the NBA at finding role players and lower-paid starters.

they are not this close without Green/Neal/Leonard, and even to a lesser extent Splitter whose a solid C. thats great scouting and coaching in effect

To me that's the most remarkable thing about the Spurs/Pop...it's easy (and prolly lazy and not very insightful) to just say "Well yeah, Duncan's just so great...that's why they've been so consistently good" ...but I think the Spurs are in an absolute league of their own far as player evaluation and acquisition and fitting players into what they want from a coaching framework...what they've been able to do without being a big time free agent destination or being the lottery is remarkable

Pop is the system. He's not getting credit for the series, he's getting credit for his resume, which is undeniably great.

Small market team who's done nothing but win under his tenure. Its his way or get out and its worked. He knows which types of players work in his system and buying in and being coachable is the #1 aspect.

Parker and Duncan are still very good which obvioiusly helps, but this isnt a top 3 talented team in the league either.

Pop is the full package when it comes to coaching though. He made Tony Parker an efficient and dynamic player. TP was a bit of a knucklehead without a jumper when he started. HE could have ended up like alot of talented but misguided young point guards, instead he's consistently been Top 5 in a deep position.

He's also very good at making adjustments, in game and between games, and is probably the best i've ever seen at calling out of bounds plays during timeouts.

And Spo decided to put Mike Miller in the lineup for the same reasons and had got criticized for it.

Not because it was a bad move, but because Mike Miller hasn't played well

No he didn't. Mike Miller was knocing the bottom out the net for a couple of games and THAT'S why he got a start.

Pop gets credit for making good choices and Spo gets bashed for making BAD choices like not playing Birdman for dang near 2 games. With Birdman on the floor (good)things tend to happen for Miami

Birdman didnt play game 4 and nobody noticed nor cared.

You're wrong about Mike Miller

They put him in the lineup because the Heats best lineup is with only 1 big on the court.

The decision was about whether to play Battier or Miller and that was based on how the 2 had been playing as of late

Pop and his staff has proven time and time again that he knows how to scout players, develop players and utilize them for maximum effectiveness, no matter how good or bad the player may be.... The only reason Gregg Popovich doesn't have more titles is because of Shaq and the Spur Killer, Kobe Bean Bryant...... He is as good of a coach not named Riley, Jackson or Auerbach......

id love to see some data on that, no team hits more end of quarter shots than the Spurs. that Duncan halftime shot in game 1 was sick

I firmly believe that if you switched each team's coaches the Heat would have already won in a sweep.

He inserted Giniboli because the Heat went small game 4.

Giniboli playing better had more to do with him being the 4th option in the starting 5.

:beli:

Is that not coaching? Spo changed the Heat's lineup and Pop countered.

Manu was struggling as the 1st option on the 2nd unit so he moved him to the first unit where he can play more so in the flow of the offense as opposed to having to create for the 2nd unit. Is that not a coaching decision?

Manu being in the 2nd unit means he's getting chased around by speedy Norris Cole. In the 1st unit, neither Wade or the newly inserted Miller are gonna chase him around. Is that not coaching?

It's like saying Bron only played better because he had 4 shooters around him opening up the floor but not giving Spo any credit for putting that lineup on the floor.

Last year we saw Spo go small and Brooks fukked it up by playing Perkins so many minutes when he was absolutely useless on both sides of the floor.

Spo made a move and Pops countered by putting Manu in the starting 5.
