It has to be said that it's just not in Popovich's nature to willfully tank games. His integrity is far too strong for that.We might be tanking for victor
The Dejounte rumors are picking up again
If so, pop taking one for the team on his way out..![]()

He's going to coach players to make them better. That's just who he is.
What seems real to me is that this Spurs roster is just good enough to be a borderline playoff team but not good enough to make any serious noise.
So the idea that trading Dejounte Murray for picks and playing a young roster of athletically gifted players who have a chance to grow together -- under a new coach (whether that's Quin Snyder or someone else currently in the Spurs organization) ...to me, does not seem that outrageous or crazy.
Obviously there's no guarantee they can get Wembanyama next year.
Joshua Primo (19 years old)
Jeremy Sochan (19 years old)
Devin Vassell (21 years old)
Keldon Johnson (22 years old)
Malaki Branham (19 years old)
Blake Wesley (19 years old)
Joe Wieskamp (22 years old)
I'm not saying that's the core but some of those guys figure to be part of the Spurs' future.
And look at how young they all are.
It's easy to be pessimistic that Primo can't develop into the kind of player that Murray currently is, but did you all forget how unpolished Murray was 4 years ago? I'm only making this comparison because Primo gets a lot of shyt from Spurs fans for some reason. But he's almost as athletically explosive as Dejounte and I think his shot is on pace to be better than Murray's was when he was 20.
San Antonio has a chance to build a deep squad in 3-4 years. It's not a bad idea to sell on Murray early -- especially if you think 2021-2022 is his ceiling. If you think Murray can get into that Ja Morant level...then yeah, you keep him. But that's a big IF.

I think the fear people have is that the Spurs finally have an all-star player and they don't want to lose him after the pain of seeing Kawhi go to Toronto.@Remote
Yeah tanking was the wrong word..they are going in a different direction..
I do think Dejounte is on a different timeline than us which I can understand..
The primo hate is wild..
The kid can play off ball which is a specialty of the offense we want to run and spurs fans won't even give him a chance lol
Murray is still young, but his last two play in performances have been suspect. Like others have said, he doesn't look like he can be a championship caliber #1. We don't play badly enough to be able to draft a potential #1, and we aren't getting any FA #1s. Loading up on picks appears to be the next step. Then again, if that was the plan, moving Keldon for a shot at Ivey should have gained more traction.I think the fear people have is that the Spurs finally have an all-star player and they don't want to lose him after the pain of seeing Kawhi go to Toronto.
But I'd argue that the current Spurs aren't really close to contending, and while Murray is great I don't think he's at that Kawhi level where he can carry the team by himself.
So if it's going to take a couple of years for the young guys to catch up to Murray, you might as well see if you can just get more picks and build a younger core that are all going to be 20-21 years old. If you're lucky (and I stress LUCKY) they can put together something like the Warriors did with their trio. Or even something similar to what Boston/Memphis have.
I really don't think there's a wrong move here. If they keep Murray, I'm happy with it. If they trade him, I'll be happy to get all those assets.
I think compared to a lot of teams in the Western Conference, San Antonio has a lot of potential upside in the future. They just need to move on a bit from Popovich's antiquated system of basketball.
We might win a maximum of 15 games next yearIf Gallo and McDermott are in the lineup opening night then you guys can catch me in the Knick thread![]()
