i remember years ago walking into a mall one day...it was the F.Y.E record store i recall one of the few that still had vinyl and hearing this over the P.A system...
asking the dude..WTF IS THAT?!?!
he respondedPortishead
i instantly bought that LP "Dummy" and fell in love with it
introduced it to a producer friend of mine and he said it changed his whole perspective on sound
I had almost exactly the same experience. It was at Crown Center in KCMO....I was walking by a Musicland store and heard "Only You" playing over the speakers, immediately went in and asked who/what genre that was.
Their first two albums are classic....their third one is cool but I prefer the first two because they sound like hip-hop, beat-wise. The third one mostly moved away from samples and scratching.
They need to drop some new shyt, that last album was 10 years ago.
Fred.
Their dark sound makes me feel like I’m in some David Lynch movie. shyt is incredibly atmospheric.I love Portishead, all 3 of they albums GOAT.
Playing they shyt when it's cold outside![]()
Wish we got another album from the Third era. They reinvented their sound with that drop. Beth's sultry vocals fans all know and loved from the first two albums turned into cries that complemented the post-apocalyptic, krautrock sound it had going for it. Not a shocker to see Geoff composing theatrical scores. If this is it from them then I'm more than happy. Anything else that follows is gravy.
Got into them because Rah Digga referenced them in a verse on Busta’s Dilla dedication tape![]()
Hunter, Threads...Over the years I've come around to Third being their best. the atmosphere on that shyt is incredible and while dummy is consistently great, the highs on third like some of the best songs ever for me
