Before this, Erdogan was slowly neutering the military because their constitution allows them to act a 3rd politically unaffliated party to keep the power of the president in check. He was defanging them in an effort to increase his authority and power.
A dude like this will find a way to kill 1500 people who he has indirectly declared his enemies and a threat to his power before this. Since he won and all the images of his supporters on the street provided a faux show of public support (despite barely winning the last election), he will start to get a big head over this.
