they're part of nato and we have bases there

I never gloated about Nice. Attacks on civilians are always awful and should be avoided--but let's not act like France is above slaughtering innocent people. Even the briefest once over of their colonial history proves that pretty convincingly.
My initial reaction in this thread, which I already said was knee-jerk, was trying to say that we shouldn't think of geopolitics as entertainment, or describe geopolitics as if it were entertainment...obviously the point was badly made.
I went to school with quite a bit of Turkish kids and was close with a few of them, so the prospect of civil war or strife there doesn't exactly excite me.
I am also leery that this entire coup is yet another attempt by the West to silence an unreliable world leader and replace him with a complete lackey, a la Iran.

Whoa wait a minute there, Champ. How are the people who got slaughtered in Nice responsible for things that happened 60-200+ years ago? How many people in Nice died that were probably from former colonies Arab, Black, and etc? Put down the Chomsky and wake up.

An army group in Turkey says it has taken over the country, with soldiers at strategic points in Istanbul and jets flying low in the capital, Ankara.

A statement read on TV said a "peace council" now ran the country and there was a curfew and martial law. There would also be new constitution.

It is unclear who the army group is. There are reports some senior army officials have been detained.

CNN Turk says President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is "safe".

It did not elaborate.

Deflect with jokes brehs

Erdogan was democratically elected. This is a slap in the face of the millions of Turks who have had their democratic right snuffed out. Disgusting.

I was actually being serious. What democracies were you referring to?
