I listened to this NPR Planet Moeny episode the other day about prisoners working remote jobs. One guy is a software engineer and makes six figures, he even bought a crib for when he gets released. A portion of their salary goes to lawyer fees, fines, etc

article about the software engineer: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/preston-thorpe-software-engineer-san-154832065.html

Bet you this is gonna cause a lot of outrage and honestly, it should. I understood if he did his time already but this is crazy work to be able to live and have the opportunity like that when hes locked up and theres people free that are struggle to get their start ups going that never did a crime in their life or been incarcerated. :camby:

That was brought up in the podcast. The CEO of the company pushed back against that and said he created that role specifically for the prisoner so it wasn't necessarily taking from other job seekers :yeshrug:

So he created a role for a prisoner when he could’ve created the role for someone not in prison :troll:

on top of that, all his salary is discretionary since the govt (taxpayers) are picking up his medical care, housing, utilities and food.

Does the prisoner have skills that other free workers don't
I don’t think so, he’s just talented in the CEO’s eyes. He was a prolific contributor to an open source project, so the CEO hired him and paid him market rate.

Listening to the podcast really had me torn, yeah these people are working jobs that could go to people who aren’t locked up. But there’s also value in have people utilizing their skills and not being slaves making street signs and whatnot

So we're upset because ..... socialism + capitalism .... works. :wtf:

To be fair, this guy is probably very, very good at his job. Based on the article, he's certainly not your average developer. Even among senior developers he's clearly above average.
