The combo of ass kissing/flattery and stealing credit for other's work is a great way to move up. The higher up the chain you go in many companies the less attention is paid to micromanaging. From what I've seen and talked with others about, the ones who move up is the ones kissing ass and working their way into conversations with the decisions makers. Once they're in the door and have the person's ear the next step is spin control. Being able to make it look like you played a large role in good things that occurred and pass blame on any fukk ups can make someone look golden even if the people really involved with the projects know differently

For myself I was on the VP track and fukked myself over. I was part of a program that had me in direct contact with the second highest ranking person in our corporation. I was pissed at the company though and dropped out cause I was sure I was about to quit. So I fukked myself on being able to shortcut myself there. Then I burned bridges by going at one of the VP's about how his friendship with my direct manager was blinding him to the fact that our division in the company was being run into the ground. My direct manager was one of those ass kissers who was a slick talker and got in good with the important people. I was on the second tier right under him along with two other managers. I just got fed up with him constantly fukking up projects, dropping the ball, then passing blame but as soon as something went right he would insert himself in as if he had anything to do with it. The VP asked me to dinner one night and I let loose. So then the VP said we need more communication and scheduled a meeting for all of us and another VP. I went off. Last time either of the VPs ever talked to me while they took my boss out to dinner. A year later more of the company stepped forward complaining and they demoted my boss all while the VP pretended he never heard of any problems with my boss previously or else he would've stepped in sooner. I was never even considered in taking his place so I moved and started working from home which effectively took me out of the running for any important positions. But I make great money with little to no stress from the work place so I'm cool with it.
I hear you but I think the term "kiss ass" is the gray area. Back when I worked in a warehouse they probably called me an ass kisser because I actually did work and volunteered overtime when really I only worked harder to pass time faster and make more money. But on high level the ppl I see doing well have mastered the power of persuasion and that typically goes beyond ass kissing and flattery. But I am with you on the race factor. Black man, no matter if you own your own business or work for somebody you'll have to be twice as good as the rest to make it.

Everywhere...You never there.
You make good points but I think you're confusing being self employed with being a business owner. There is a difference. If your business depends on you to be there 100% of the time then you don't have a business you've created a job for yourself. At some point if you want to grow your business you have to start delegating the technical parts. This is typically why employee will always have more technical knowledge than his Manager. Zuckerberg is the exception not the rule but you best believe shareholders want his ass gone.

Fair points ... I just think there are less variables involved when you possess a highly specialized skill . And again , 80% of the workforce is probably employed in non technical , non skilled positions. And more than likely , most folks on this board are in non skilled positions ... so playing those odds, yeah, these anti social muhfukkas on here better get their charisma game up . :mjlol:

Im head of raw materials in my dept. It's decent. Takes 3-4 years to move up to upper management. BUT I'm getting into another company if the switch is better. If not wait till December for the raise and bonus. Can't complain. But all in due time for that ceo level. Just keep a good work ethic (get things taken care before it's even asked) , network at conferences and always look for other opportunities

i made director level about 3 years ago, earlier this year i hit principle director level, and i am 2 levels away from being partner at a fortune 30 company

the higher i go the less work i do, it's all about the perception people have of you

sounds corny, but dress nice, talk nice, make an effort to get to know people - those retarded things go a long ass way in corporate america

Being in a management role in the Federal Government is a nightmare I want no parts of.

That GS-15/SES director check look nice but the political bullshyt that come with it ain't worth it. Just give me a non supervisory GS-13 position where I can telework from a low cost of living area and I'll be set.
lmao this is a joke i hope

the only thing a civil service person should be doing is trying to figure out how they will parlay their gov experience to a contracting gig and get out

i know many ses2/3's that don't make sh*t, but it will set you up nicely if you play your cards right and learn the way gov contracting works

I became a manager in the Treasury dept of the company I work for last year, nothing really changed except the title and bump in pay, I really don't do shyt all day. Could probably advance even further if I left for another company but i'm kind of shook to leave, don't know what kind of bullshyt you're going to encounter when you land at a new gig.

nikka I'm a student....

Everybody should stop right there and stop reading whatever else you have to say. Honestly you have no business even being in this thread.

What is it with college students and thinking they have everything figured out? Reading your posts you would think you'd had 10-15 years of real world experience. This is exactly why people take experience over education. Bunch of kids who think they know everything on this board.

That's if I just want to coast and be chill with working.:yeshrug:

I'd parlay my expertise into a very specific subset of law whenever I leave. Factor in that the gov is paying for my schooling, I'm straight no matter where I go really.:ehh:

With this thread I'm trying to get to the meat of why there isn't more of us in positions that can hire more of us. There are so many bullshyt titles out here. Like I told the homie the other day if you can't hire and fire with complete autonomy then you're not a Manager. I hurt his feelings but it's the truth.

I need to get my property management license. From there I'll need to take a few more courses to actually be a desirable candidate. Money is my main issue now. I need to be able to pay for classes and the market is a bit too slow.
