I hear you but I think the term "kiss ass" is the gray area. Back when I worked in a warehouse they probably called me an ass kisser because I actually did work and volunteered overtime when really I only worked harder to pass time faster and make more money. But on high level the ppl I see doing well have mastered the power of persuasion and that typically goes beyond ass kissing and flattery. But I am with you on the race factor. Black man, no matter if you own your own business or work for somebody you'll have to be twice as good as the rest to make it.The combo of ass kissing/flattery and stealing credit for other's work is a great way to move up. The higher up the chain you go in many companies the less attention is paid to micromanaging. From what I've seen and talked with others about, the ones who move up is the ones kissing ass and working their way into conversations with the decisions makers. Once they're in the door and have the person's ear the next step is spin control. Being able to make it look like you played a large role in good things that occurred and pass blame on any fukk ups can make someone look golden even if the people really involved with the projects know differently
For myself I was on the VP track and fukked myself over. I was part of a program that had me in direct contact with the second highest ranking person in our corporation. I was pissed at the company though and dropped out cause I was sure I was about to quit. So I fukked myself on being able to shortcut myself there. Then I burned bridges by going at one of the VP's about how his friendship with my direct manager was blinding him to the fact that our division in the company was being run into the ground. My direct manager was one of those ass kissers who was a slick talker and got in good with the important people. I was on the second tier right under him along with two other managers. I just got fed up with him constantly fukking up projects, dropping the ball, then passing blame but as soon as something went right he would insert himself in as if he had anything to do with it. The VP asked me to dinner one night and I let loose. So then the VP said we need more communication and scheduled a meeting for all of us and another VP. I went off. Last time either of the VPs ever talked to me while they took my boss out to dinner. A year later more of the company stepped forward complaining and they demoted my boss all while the VP pretended he never heard of any problems with my boss previously or else he would've stepped in sooner. I was never even considered in taking his place so I moved and started working from home which effectively took me out of the running for any important positions. But I make great money with little to no stress from the work place so I'm cool with it.
