This is thing though, FB and Twitter STARTED off free. Music has NEVER been free. I know the internet provides easy access to leaks and all that but again, we're talking about artists who we CLAIM we like and want to hear more from but we won't actually PAY for it? That's stupid. If you like Drake and want to call yourself a fan and be all up in message boards going back and forth then you had better be ready to put your wallet where your mouth is and SUPPORT the man's artistic vision. I just wrote and posted a goddamn dissertation on the greatness of Nas's Hip Hop Is Dead album, now what kind of fraud would I be if I never actually financially supported the artist whose album I'm stanning? Same thing for Kendrick Lamar, it was a blessing that the man went platinum with such an excellent album, people actually SUPPORTED his artistic vision, and now he can make whatever type of music he wants. We should be doing that with ALL artists we want to see on these "best albums" lists or want to see win Grammy's. We the CONSUMER dictate what's hot and what's Poppin with OUR wallets and who we choose to support....

I'm not sure what you're trying to say but you should emulate your screen name. This has nothing to do with love because this is a business. If an artist puts out music for sale and I like it, then money will be spent for it. It's no different than any other monetary transaction for a service.

Or maybe the music industry can adapt it's business model to try and keep up with the times. A hustle's a hustle. If you're an artist and you're in this game for monetary gain, then find a new way to make that money. Or maybe they could lower the price of CD's to like five dollars a pop. Maybe that would get more ppl in the stores.

If the label heads were creative enough and innovative enough, they'd come up with new ways to squeeze money from the consumer. Maybe the retail album model is dead and it's time for them to explore new ventures.

I do believe you should probably still cop their shyt (I dont ). But at the end of the day it's on the onus of the producer to find a way to monetize on their product. The music industries economic model is ARCHAIC, it doesn't fit and hasn't progressed with modern technological advancements. When Napster and all that was popping off they shoulda spent that time, money, and effort to figure a way to capatilize off of it. They did all that to Napster and something else just popped up and replaced it.

Actually lowering the price may be even worse. I think what Nipsey hustle is doing with his $100 album and only 1000 copies is great. Supply and Demand. Imagine if Drake decided to only release x amount of copies of his album (also throw in some extra incentives)...he wouldnt have to sell it at $10 a pop and only make back 6.6 million, sell 100k limited copies at $100 and make back 10million, and the cost to manufacture, distribute 100k copies is significantly less than what it would for 650k. Then maybe progressively drop the price over time or something.

Im not saying that's what they should do but something other than the standard. Release a single, 3 months later release album, go on promo run, tour. Rinse, repeat.

Instead of doing something original and trying to make money from it they just pandered to the lowest common denominator and started giving shyt out for free (mixtapes). That fukked the whole thing up. Now you got producers who dont even get paid for their work.

Co-Sign thread starter, but that's probably the standard these days. Out of the majority of my friends, I'm probably the only one who still cops albums, although the rest still hit up the live shows etc so they're still supporting. It's mostly the females I know who use iTunes

The way I look at it, if I listen to an album 3-4 times it deserves my money, that's 3-4 hours of my time, and $10-$15 for that is nothing in my mind, especially if I want that artist to continue making music at that level. (Plus the shyt sounds better in my car when on CD).

And that's just new releases by American artists, I always go back and cop old classics, and support local NZ artists as well. $10-$20 a fortnight is nothing in the scheme of things, price of a couple drinks at the bar.

Record companies are taking a piece of every monetary opportunity that an artist can bring in. People keep saying that they should get with the times but you still won't buy no matter what. Nipsey's idea only works for him and artists around that level whether they are a little higher or lower. No way Drake would do that. He is at a level where that would be a waste. Drake has popularity that gives him access to endorsements and other opportunities that Nipsey will never see. Plus, Drake's fanbase mobilizes and purchases his albums. That has and always be the key. No excuses, no passing the buck. Speak with your money.

Sure, it's at the expense of the artist because they cannot make people pay for music. Remember when people said that they downloaded to stick it to the labels? I agree with you that ppl should pay. But coming from my perspective (young early 20's college kid), I grew up in the DL era. You have to understand the mentality of ppl my age and younger, we don't feel as if we should pay for this because in our minds there's no reason to. We don't even consider it stealing at this point, it's just that commonplace. The thing about providing the limited copies of the album is it makes it so artists don't have to focus on singles to drive sales, the consumer that'll pay $100 for an album (just an example, not necessarily the only solution) isn't going to care about chart-topping singles, they're going to want some REAL music...

Look at MMG for example, why would anybody feel any need to buy that group album, when a week later Meek just gonna come out with a free mixtape (arguably better than the album) and now they say Meek and Wale got a joint tape coming out soon, and they wonder why we just download all their shyt
