Jay made some big business moves and excelled as a rapper and really is the face of the boss hustler image. Marrying Beyonce elevated him to another stratosphere.

Puff married hip-hop and R&B and is behind the most iconic acts in hip-hop and R&B. The first successful hip-hop based person to go into their own fashion brand, alcohol brand, reality show, over-sharing social media presence, commercialize social justice movement (vote or die), and a host of other things.

Jay had several chapters to his legacy. Puff after a certain point in time wasn't as prominent.

Jay Z married Beyonce in 2008. Jay Z was already a household name BEFORE 2008. Some of you are too young to be even be trying to entertain this discussion. Jay Z had a whole solo career before the world even knew who Beyonce was. I still remember first seeing Beyonce featured ona Missy album cut in 1999 and appearing as the love interest in Case's video in 1999. Yeah, Destiny's Child released an album that went 7X platinum the same year which was bigger than any Jay album, but that group success didn't translate into immediate solo success for Beyonce. By the time, the third Destiny's Child album came out, the group was getting booed and that third album sold half of what the previous one sold. Then Beyonce dropped solo songs that flopped. Kelly had a whole hit with Nelly that was bigger than Jay's song with Beyonce and both came out the same year. Beyonce didn't take off until "Crazy In Love" with Jay.

these are not equivalent sir. at all

They are.

Jennifer Lopez was a whole movie star on the strength of Selena and a few other roles before she and Puff started dating. Puff had already had several hits and put out several groups and artists, sold millions of records.

Beyonce was in a group that sold millions of records before getting with Jay. Jay had sold millions of records, had a clothing line, and had just released Blueprint by the time he linked with Beyonce.

When you think about R&B: Mary J, Jodeci, Total, Faith Evans
Hip-Hop: Biggie, Mase, The LOX...Puff is one of the pillars of the 90s Vibe/aesthetic that is so championed. Jay is obviously the more accomplished/skilled single sole artist but the totality favors Puff…the music/production, the dancing, the fashion, etc.

To me it’s like comparing Allen Iverson & Kobe. Same beast but two way different animals. Kobe’s obviously the more accomplished player…but impact wise on an eye level at their respective heights…WAY more cats was rocking headbands, cornrows, and working on their crossovers than they were imitating Kobe’s skills (although many were/still do). Same applies here.
