Struggle post game analysis:
Short version: The pick and roll is the basis of most offenses in this league and the starters can't stop it because Calderon and AA both struggle with it. Bigs aren't communicating at all on those plays either it looks like. The bench has KOQ late on every rotation and Lou Amundson actually is looking like a better option than any other bench big because he actually knows help rotations...he's not great at 'em but at least he knows what he's SUPPOSED to do. The team looked demoralized tonight. KP played badly, Melo had trouble with the jumper again and that baseline open drive where he couldn't dunk and grimaced after with no contact...scary stuff. AA was invisible. That's our top three guys, all struggling. That'll translate to a blow out every time.
Melo: Actually played a solid game but couldn't find his jumper and we needed it. Like I said above, he drove baseline and had a free lane but couldn't get high enough to dunk it. He made a pained face after too. Idk if it's his ankle or what, but it made me nervous. 16,6 and 4 in 31 mins...passing was still pretty as hell at least.
AA: Sasha coulda given us as much as he did tn. 'nuff said.
KP: Needed 17 attempts to give us 13 points and struggled all night on the defensive end. If he can't post up shorter guys that have a little weight to 'em, he'll be in trouble. He's gotta get that strength up or start taking face up drives on those guys because he'll get the foul calls; I'm confident of that. 8 boards in 28 wasn't too shabby. One of his worst games.
Jose Calderon: Phil needs to Old Yeller this guy because Fisher doesn't seem to think it's important that we adjust things defensively in spite of the defensive play collapsing every time teams choose to run a consistent PnR attack at him. Deandre Jordan should send him a thank you note.
RoLo: Jordan kept him out of the deep post and he was pretty awful offensively for it. 11 attempts to give us 6 points is atrocious. He's realized the hook shot works but hasn't realized that it doesn't work nearly as well unless he's pretty damned close to the basket. That shot to CP3's grill piece is the only thing he did that showed real fire and I'm not a fan of that cheap shot ish...wait till he cuts across the lane because you know Jose is gonna let him, and hit the hell out of him then do your little T-Rex armed run down the court and act confused when they give you a flagrant 1.
Here's an aside, Fish just said we're fortunate to get out of this game safely...wtf does that even mean dude? Clippers don't even have any real goons, Austin Rivers was the only cat that actually looked like he wanted problems. DJ is fake hustle just like CP and Blake when it comes to toughness. Safety!? My bad back to this...
LG: I actually thought he did a lot of good things. Looked for his shot in the midrange again and it was effective again. 5-7 for 10 points with a lot of nice defensive moments too.
Grant: 13 points on 6 attempts, 8 assists in 24 minutes. He was the only guard that got inside consistently. Made rookie mistakes, but played hard all game. He's night and day when he's allowed to play through pick and rolls though.
KOQ: Late on damn near every rotation and you cannot get minutes if you're gonna do that.
KS: 6 points on 7 attempts, did have a nice assist at one point (2 total), not good defensively.
Lou: Didn't play enough minutes for me to hate on him, which by default makes him my pick for last big in the rotation behind RoLo and KP...Honestly, at least he moves full speed on rotations.
D-Will: Doesn't look as good with the bench unit which has pretty weird spacing. But when he rocks with the starters, he shows what he can do with seams to run through. Was a spark early, gave very little later on.
Sasha: I know it was garbage time, but this is two games in a row that he's part of a fourth quarter small ball line-up at SF and Jamal Crawford looked like he was young again dribbling by the guy. That's right...of all the trash we had to watch tn, this guy still managed to put the garbage in garbage time.
Fisher: A pick and roll offense came into the building and he let Jose flounder and made no valuable adjustments that I can think of right now (granted I usually sleep on it because I could be blinded by rage after one like this but I doubt it on this one). I gotta assume that his answer to the Clippers fast break was to have the guards drop back as soon as a shot went up, because I have no clue if these dudes chased even one long rebound. That didn't solve much because their bigs still outran ours which meant a lot of awkward match-ups and when we did get down in time they just ran pick and roll until they got into the lane or got a mismatch. The players didn't help him and he didn't help them...everyone sucked.
Random: Wes Johnson, Paul Pierce, Jamal Crawford and Cole Aldritch...those cats all beat on us tn...that's a damned shame. It's been like five years of that stupid Friday Night Knicks theme; it's a crappy song and we never play well when that garbage is on. Best news is our guys got plenty of rest while Charlotte went to OT. Phil Jackson needs to find a PG...watching Jose makes me think there's probably somebody warming their hands over a dumpster fire tn that could defend better. Where's Delonte West's crazy ass? Baron Davis' come back would probably be more interesting to watch. The Chinese Allstar that gave up 60 to Michael Beasley probably has better PnR defense. Phil...call Clarence...tell him to find us anybody at all. Next time RoLo hits a PG in the face for killing the Knicks, it needs to be Jose f'n Calderon.
