After the afternoon games Sunday, Carolina had taken over the NFL lead in total number of points scored (411) and average points per game (31.6). The Panthers have scored at least 33 points in five of their past six games. The fact that a Carolina team that was offensively challenged for much of last year (even with Kelvin Benjamin) can lead the entire NFL in scoring – that’s almost as remarkable as 13-0 to me.
▪ The Panthers are going to need to do whatever it takes to keep defensive tackle Kawann Short around – and that means a very big contract extension, likely this offseason. Not since Kris Jenkins in his prime has Carolina had such a disruptive pass rushing force straight up the middle. With two sacks Sunday, Short has nine for the year. That’s the most in any Panthers season for a defensive tackle, surpassing Jenkins’ seven in 2002.
▪ Do you think Ted Ginn Jr. might dig Cam Newton? In his nine-year NFL career, Ginn has had three games in which he has scored multiple receiving TDs. All three have come this season – and two of them in the past two weeks. There were no issues with drops on Sunday. Ginn averaged – and this is not a misprint – 60 yards a catch.
▪ The Panthers’ 260-yard outburst in the first quarter was amazing on a number of levels. It was the most yardage the Panthers have ever gained in any quarter, and the most any NFL team has gained all season in a single quarter. By halftime, Cam Newton had thrown for 246 yards before the Panthers shut him down early.

- Are now leading the NFL in scoring at 31.6 points per game.
- Have scored at least 20 points in each of their 13 games. The franchise’s longest such streak before this season was nine games with 20 or more at the start of 2009.
- Have scored on eight of their 13 opening drives.
- Gained 260 yards in the first quarter, they most they’ve ever gained in any quarter.

- Are 17-3 in December since 2011, matching Seattle for the best record in the month during that timeframe.
Cam in his 16 (regular season) starts since the car accident

3603 yards (7.6 ypa)

11 INT
141 rushes
677 yards (4.8 ypc)

Thomas Davis has 3 INT, 4 FF, and 5.5 sacks this season. A player attaining those numbers has only happened 8 times in the SB era.
1986 LB Wilber Marshall (5 INT, 5.5 sacks, 4 FF - All-Pro)
1991 LB Wilber Marshall (5 INT, 5.5 sacks, 4 FF - bizarre that its identical)
1991 LB Seth Joyner (3 INT, 6.5 sacks, 6 FF - Pro Bowl)
1992 CB Rod Woodson (4 INT, 6 sacks, 4 FF - All-Pro)
1992 LB James Francis (3 INT, 6 sacks, 4 FF)
1993 LB Pat Swilling (3 INT, 6.5 sacks, 5 FF - Pro Bowl)
1995 LB Greg Lloyd (3 INT, 6.5 sacks, 6 FF - All-Pro)
2015 LB Thomas Davis (3 INT, 5.5 sacks, 4 FF)
here are the notes:
—A 38-0 lead allowed coach Ron Rivera to rest most of his starters in the fourth quarter. On the offensive line, Michael Oher, Ryan Kalil and Trai Turner were pulled early while Andrew Norwell stayed at left guard and Mike Remmers jumped over to left tackle. Rookie Daryl Williams, who also featured in the Panthers’ jumbo package, finished out the game at right tackle.
—Greg Olsen (knee), who was held out of the second half as a precaution, played his fewest snaps since late 2011.
—The Panthers were also cautious with Jonathan Stewart (foot), which allowed Fozzy Whittaker to see his most playing time since last year’s tie in Cincinnati. Stewart’s 19 snaps were his fewest since 2013.
—Kurt Coleman has played 880 of 888 possible snaps this year. He missed one in Seattle and he sat out for seven at the end of the rout against Washington.
—Shaq Thompson‘s 37 snaps were his most since he played 48 against the Bucs in Week 4. Because of injuries in the secondary, the Panthers may use the rookie a bit more now in a hybrid role.
—Charles Johnson may not like it, but his playing time since returning from temporary injured reserve has made sense. The Panthers eased him back in with 21 snaps against the Cowboys before ramping Johnson up to 51 plays in New Orleans. So during Sunday’s blowout, coaches pretty much split the difference, giving him 34 snaps.
—Cortland Finnegan, who dealt with some cramping in the fourth quarter, played 33 snaps, just like he did in his debut against the Saints
Newton has an accuracy percentage of an NFL-best 51.7 percent on throws that travel 20-plus yards, according to Pro Football Focus.
He has completed 25 of 60 attempts with six drops for 879 yards, nine touchdowns and one interception.
Newton isn’t just running for a lot of touchdowns by the standards of a quarterback. Newton is running for a lot of touchdowns by the standards of a running back. There’s only one NFL player who has run for at least five touchdowns in each of the last five seasons, and it’s not a running back. It’s Newton.
There are four running backs who have rushed for at least five touchdowns in four of the last five seasons: LeGarrette Blount, Mark Ingram, Marshawn Lynch and Adrian Peterson. But none of them have scored five touchdowns in five out of five years like Newton, and unless Lynch comes back from his injury and scores two touchdowns in the next three games, none of them will.
Newton already has 40 rushing touchdowns in his career, with three games left in his fifth season. Not only has no quarterback done that, but no quarterback has come close: Daunte Culpepper, with 26 rushing touchdowns in his first five seasons, comes the closest.
With 40 rushing touchdowns in his first five seasons, Newton is ahead of the pace of a lot of great running backs, and every running back who entered the league with Newton in 2011: DeMarco Murray, who leads the 2011 running back draft class in rushing touchdowns, is at 32, eight touchdowns behind Newton.
So peanut out for the year or resting for playoffs his vet presense gone be needed but I feel fennegan gone be ok going fwd...our db the least of my worries ....
Like bro said we gone need Kony to step up and help CJ and Chiraq in da pass rush... Our D been the most balanced I've ever seen it
Norman ,bene , shaq, and Kurt Cobain gone hold it down...
wr workout is interesting ....
As far as Stew we need to rest him in NY and let fozzy ,Tolbert and CAP carry the load ....play him the first half vs Atlanta to keep his mojo going with no rust heading into the playoffs ...I'd do the same with Olsen. ..let my nikka dikkson get some more reps ...we can afford to lose either at this point
bene hurt with fracture leg....out for season/playoffs
obj joker cleats are supposed to be a shot at norman cause he's apparently batman. also talks about Harrison
I remember when a non Panthers breh could still sneak in here. You Cookout boys have done it.
It seemed like a couple years ago it was Chudzinski > Shula. Do you guys think Shula is better now? What has he gotten better at?
Shula has become much better at designing plays.Shula and Cam has been together for an extended period of time and allowed Cam to get comfortable in the system. (One reason why Brady and Rodgers are the GOATS is because of the consistency they were allowed to develop by being in the same system for an extended period of time). He's calling his own plays now and doing audibles on the fly, plus he commands the hurry-up offense like a true elite QB. The only drawback or issue I have is some of the unnecessary QB runs they call for Cam which tend to be OD at times.
He's letting Cam do what he does best, operate out of the no-huddle/hurry up. Said that shyt way back in the thread, but Cam is a rythm passer. He gets in the best rythm and is more accurate operating out of the no-huddle/ hurry up. Shula and Riverboat have been letting him cook since the Minnesota game and we've been rolling ever since.Shula has become much better at designing plays.
But the main props is for him letting Cam just run the offense most of the time. Giving Cam good options to pick from.
