My little cousin is a HS freshman, and he's pretty nice at basketball. Dude told me he wants to play for Oak Hill Academy, and asked me did I know how he could do that.

What does it really take to play for Oak Hill Academically?

How good is he?

Oak Hill actually has a regular varsity team too he could play for if he wants to; they're good on a regular level (at least they used to be 15 years ago when I was in school) but obviously those kids aren't going D1 or anything like that.

They got TWO teams? Damn.

He's good. I mean, is he an NBA prospect? I don't want to talk down on my little cousin, but I'd have to say no. I do think he could play low-level D1 if he keeps progressing.

those schools come to you, you don't go to them for information. i mean if the only ball he's playing is at the local park then they won't know he exists, but if he's playing any kind of organize ball, especially on the summer circuit, someone has seen him.

He plays AAU, so he's out there to be seen. Maybe what they're seeing isn't impressive enough, I guess.

Same way you get recruited at the college level. Pass your classes, hit the gym, send your tape out, try to network.

Not everybody on Oak Hill/Montverde/Brewster/Findlay Prep/Huntington Prep/etc is a top 100 type recruit. Those programs need supporting castes too. Tell your cousin to be upfront about being willing to do the grunt work if that’s really something they want.

That's what I'm thinking. While these schools have been bringing in super-elite players for years, a lot of those dudes ain't beasting in college and/or going pro.
