I have great respect for Common. Be is a classic to me. He's just not really a typical rapper, he might not be the rapper who kills his features, and he does a lot of side projects too, maybe that's why he is never in the GOAT discussion

Define a typical rapper :jbhmm:....dude is in my Top 10- 15.

Majority of his albums are least 4/5. Easy going rapper that is socially conscious, slight politically conscious, introspective, not preachy, talks about everyday life and society. The production is always pretty solid. He is a blessing for the genre to be as well respected and successful in sea of entertaining but soulless lyricism.

I recognize that he's talented, but his music never appealed to me.

He has that snotty nosed, good guy face.....Plus that afrocentric/simping music he did for Badu took him off my radar.

Far from shytty....just not my cup of tea:francis:

Back in my early teen years I thought Common was straight :snooze: status. It wasn't until Be dropped that I was :whoo:. Went back and listened to his whole catalogue and was like :ohlawd: (Can't mess with Electric Circus and UMC tho) He a acquired taste tho. The way he be painting pictures be having me thinking I'm on the Southside of Chicago.

@mobbinfms

I can give you a definitive top 5 but I'll try 10 as well.

1. Ghostface Killah
2. Jay-Z
3. Ice Cube
4. Common
5. Redman
6. Big Boi
7. Rakim
8. Kool G Rap
9. Scarface
10. Idk who to put here, maybe MF DOOM

Inb4 all the salt over no Nas or Pac or Biggie or whatever. I value body of work/discography more than anything else so I think my list reflects that. Because you can talk about lyrical and stylistic preferences all you want, but what do you have to show for it? That's what matters to me.

You saying Nas ain't got a good body of work / discography? I mean, his unreleased stuff alone...

Or isn't just some shyt people say just because it sounds good? I fukk with some of shyt like The Light, The Corner his guest verse on Respiration off Blackstar but by in large everytime I hear this nikka his shyt doesn't move me. Not saying Common Is wack but everytime I see nikkas refer to him as some hip hop Legend I pull a :patrice:.Is common a legend because he stuck around for 20 years on some Kevin Willis shyt or am I missing something? Maybe some old head can school me.
The album you really need to listen to is Like Water For Chocolate...I think it's his best album aside from Resurrection.

Personally, I feel he hasn't done anything as remarkable since that album.

Brehhhhhh !!!

Yo....OMG

You can't tell me LWFC isn't common at his best.

Features from Mos Def, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu...
75% of the album produced by J Dilla (RIP)

And that cover artwork...

:wow:

I put this in the same realm as The Roots' "Things Fall Apart"
