I’ve said this before but lowkey feel like this is the reason a lot of 6’s and 7’s back in the day gained such a cult legend status. Sometimes games that weren’t the greatest were the ones that were always available at blockbuster so when you couldn’t get anyhting else you had to pick up something like smash tv or that horrible lion king game.

not only that but you were forced to play it also. It was your new game for the weekend so you put your all into getting the most out of it and part of that memory slowly turned into being mixed into a good gaming moment because of the circumstances.

I dont think any of these less than great Games have that ability anymore. People have so many options and games are so accessibile people just move on, even for good games. It plays into people having lower attention spans, thats if kids just don’t settle for watching their favorite streamers play it instead.

It's admittedly why I revere Chrono Cross & Legend of Legaia so much. Those were Blockbuster rentals that my mom picked up for me in her way home from work. Blind rentals. Totally unexpected and I would have never entered Blockbuster looking for them, but I found a lot of enjoyment in them.

And of a male was at the counter you could rent an M rated game no problem without a adult

But if a woman was at the counter :francis:

Guy at the counter with a ponytail and nose rings tried to convince my pops not to rent Vice City. He hit his ass with the Uncle Willie.

Oh this is facts.

An extreme example for me was renting super man 64. Did I enjoy it? No, did i grin and bear it cuz that’s all I had? Yes :francis:

I remember playing demo disks over and over again because I couldn’t get the real game. So I have fond memories of the first level of MGS even tho I didn’t play it till years later. You worked with what you had back then and were thankful.

I don't miss the store itself , but the experience of going with my family and picking a movie/game just based on the cover.
Reviews were not that big back then to impact your choice , at least for me since I was just a kid.

how many times did u go there and pick a game based on the cover art only for it to be complete :trash:

happened to me more times than I'd like to remember.

Can't say I really miss them outside of nostalgia - I do have fond memories browsing there. The horror section had me shook as a little kid :mjlol:

Honestly, those free demo discs were what really put me onto games back then (Ape Escape, Klonoa, Threads of Fate, Legend of Dragoon, THPS 2, etc)

Side note - I remember Crash 3 having a hidden Spyro 1 demo, that was a game changer :wow: classic platformer passing the baton to another
