Their actual philosophies, life stories, acts, teachings can be directly tied to them specifically as historic figures.
Of course he existed. He just falls into the same category as Santa claus. A historical figure whose legend became greater than the person himself. Time and lack of historical sources blended the man and the myth to the point where almost all of it is heresy.
