It's relative to where you live. The average salary in NC across all professions is $41,000. So here 60k is nice because of the low cost of living

Tell that to that bum who was using below 80k as a nationwide benchmark (in the other thread) for "You ain't balling Negro" :comeon:

If it's for better pay and more options and not necessarily a passion for IT, I would also consider getting an MBA from a good school. With your background, an MBA from a top school can give you a good 20-30k pay bump. An MBA from a good school is one of the best options that I know for people who want to make a career change without having to start over.

Fellas pay attention on this one because it is one of the few circumstances where I agree an MBA is valuable. Otherwise: Hold off on it until you are in Senior Management or 45+ years of age .:whoa:

I can't say much about the general industry and what someone else should do with their career, there's too many variables involved, but in my view the best info in this thread is from @Data-Hawk. And least informed posts probably from TWISM (sorry breh.)

LMAO, terrible advice. But I hope OP takes it, goes into debt 50K and foregoes a years salary for a crappy "bump" in pay.

I like my work actually. There's just been a lot of changes and bullshyt at my job recently. I got turned down for a promotion and it has me feeling a way. I think my reputation is tarnished because I'm not a go along to get along type dude when it comes to working with a$$holes. I keep watching white faces get promoted. Right now all the chemists at my job are black except one Egyptian dude and all the management is white. Out of 4 chemists there's me with a bio degree, a black female with a chem degree and a masters in statistics and a Haitian guy with a chem degree and an MBA. Everybody in management is white and only has a bachelors.

I'm in a position where I have the time and means to make a career switch. I'm not in a position to move to a new location now though. There's more professional options and potential for higher pay if I switch to IT. I just don't know if I want to put money for more schooling, be it a compsci degree or coding bootcamp and/or take less money than I make now to start in the field.
IT is a field you dont need to go into debt to get paid with. Literally, all you have to do..... is know what youre doing. Everything you lack on paper is just an excuse to pay you less money.

If you knew how how to manage a sql database you could get paid. SQL in 30 days. There are so many ways in IT to get cake because at some level, technology rules everything around us.

Im older then you, have a full set of hair with 1 grey. You bald. Whos stressin? All the chemist at my job = grey bald or dying their hair.

IT :blessed:

I have experience from udemy, codecademy, udacity, etc. and signed up for a coding web development bootcamp that starts next week. I also helped someone develop part of an app using Swift.

I was in dire need of a career change. Saved up money, quit my job and signed up for a bootcamp to get into another field. Don't have time for a 4 year degree.

I think good boot camps teach you how to code rather than just languages/syntax.

MBA from a top 20 school pretty much guarantees you 100k on average, so don't knock it, but you will have to relocate for that.

Are you willing to spend the next year or two of your free time entirely on programming or programming related subjects? Even with the bootcamp thing, the programming world changes extremely fast and if you don't like programming, it's not going to be very fun spending having to learn an entirely new framework after spending months learning some other one. This is a profession you join if you really enjoy what you're doing.

But do you have a job?
