BMF, Power, Power Book 2, Raising Kanaan, Snowfall, Godfather of Harlem, Top Boy, etc…. How come the only depictions of the black experience is drug dealing, gang banging, and the streets?

Let me say depictions of black male masculinity, every other show is a black LGBT or feminized version of black masculinity or safe negro

50 cent on a Late night show said something to the effect of multiple ethnicities have organized crime films and shows. Are Black Americans not allowed to be shown in organized crime depictions?

Why do we keep watching those shows?

They are, but I think the issue is that Black Americans don't have a diversity of shows with strong Black male leads. At least according to the OP.

I’m just asking questions my boy, i see nikkas gravitating towards these kind of show’s way more than any of the other shows you just mentioned

imma street nikka myself and I’m not gunna go into detail because it’s going to come off a certain way but I ain’t say all of that

Black people are not monolithic and we have a diverse group of talented people. Maybe it’s my surroundings and nikkas i be around, I’m from the Bronx and nikkas in the trenches not watching none of the shyt you linked. But again maybe it’s my surroundings that’s giving me this “false consensus effect” where I’m overestimating my experiences and thinking everybody the same

I’m Just asking questions nikkas could tone down the weirdo suspect c00n shyt

you acting obtuse and being contrarian for the sake of arguing….you know nikkas are represented exclusively as street nikkas and if not there’s a feminization or interracial relationship on those shows that nikkas always complaining about lol

I don’t get how me saying this is controversial when rappers is getting indicted and killed left and right and people keep ignoring the negative ramifications of promoting these kind of shows

You ain’t no street nikka with a vocabulary like this :russ:

And what the fukk do you mean “normal” black folks? So normal black folks can only relate to crime shows and not Atlanta, Black Lighting, Blackish etc?

Blame the production studios that fund and promote these titles.

Do you think black people have a say in what we watch?

We simply watch what’s put in front of us.

are those races seeing 600+ Murders a year like Chicago? Are they seeing murder rate’s like Memphis, St. Louis, Camden, Detroit? Are Kpop musicians dying left and right like our musicians?
Tupac died a violent death, Suge Knight went to Jail for murder, James Gandolfini died sniffing coke with hows in paris at 50 year’s old that’s the difference that distinction

@staticshock i got some more big words for you blood lol

We are seeing a cultural mimesis reflected through music and our programming and i think we are desensitized and it’s that insouciance and apathy that’s killing us

I am not sure what this is referring to in terms of my post.

But I will say shows like Power etc occurred after Chicago homicide rates.
And Chicgacgo and other urban centers had gun violence issue before these shows.

The biggest contributer to Black gun violence from what I've seen by those who have studied it is poverty, unrepaired generational oppression, unemployment ,under resourced schools, increased access to illegal firearms by youth, the underground drug economy and young black male/ youth participation in it.

Not mimicking shows and movies.

Also even if you are of the belief that Black gun violence will end substantially with the elimination of, or at least, a bigger variety of depictions of Black masculinity outside Black crime drama shows, I think you should support Black independent shows and filmmakers.
Write to and call networks about what you would like to see instead in regards to Black male leads ( ex. Will Smith in King George) and support the Black shows that show it. Also invite others to do the same.

You will be surprised how much progress can be made when you start with a few

Maybe even take a online screen writing class and write the stories you want to see.
Maybe even contact 50 cents people himself. He produced a a Black legal Drama in ABC this past year with a Black male leads about a incarcerated wrongly accused man who became a lawyer to free himself and others.

Cuz that’s what a lot of brehs glorify. If you don’t agree with rappers rapping about killing, you’re a “cac”? Alotta brehs just aren’t conducive to our people and are more of a hindrance.
