i was in chicago over the weekend and :banderas:

everyone hears about the crime/violence but i didnt see anything to make me feel like i was in danger the entire time i was there. i bought some jordans from a ruvilla in the southside and didnt see anyone with :demonic: intentions

the nightlife is great, downtown is immaculate compared to dirty ass SF or NYC, the housing is ridiculously cheap

why aren't people moving there in droves?
1500$ can get me a 1 bedroom in a luxury highrise in the heart of downtown. that same 1500$ in SF = sharing a 400sq foot studio with a bunch of hipsters in SF. wtf.

the brutal winters can't be the only thing keeping people away.
someone from chicago tell me why i shouldnt move, and why i should stay in cali :sadcam:

To live downtown you need to make $120,000+/year as an individual, that's not easy.

You ain't see Rahms meter maids roaming the streets waiting to catch you slipping and hit you with that ticket.

Nightlife is dope as hell, no question.

You ain't see the real Chicago in a week though.

nah... i've been checking apartment listings... theres a bunch of shyt downtown for under 1800$ a month, which is absurd for a city like chicago
even the streeter building, 1br going for around 2100$... that's like the going rate for the boring suburbs 40 minutes outside of SF

my friends cousins are all trying to gtfo of chicago, but wouldnt say why.. im confused. chicago seems like heaven compared to here right now (excluding weather)

I lived in Streeterville for a while making only about $75k a year.

The trick is getting approved to live there. Downtown is run by various condo associations that are there to prevent unsavory buyers and tenants from living there. It's totally :mjpls:

If you get approved to live there. Great. That's just the first hurdle. Moving in is a b!tch. Gotta go through all this bullsh!t to get your stuff in the door. Rules and regulations that govern the conduct of any negroes that happen to slip by the screeners are going to be fully enforced.

If you're young, Black, and/or like to listen to music with bass while chiefing living downtown is a mistake. As cool as it is you're going to get harassed by the condo association. Doesn't matter if you're cool with the doorman, you're going to get got eventually.

Let me clarify: To live "well" downtown, and fully enjoy everything it has to offer, you need to make that amount.

You lived in Streeterville making 75k, that's what ~$1,300/week after taxes?

Where'd you live in Streeterville? Building, floor, and floor plan?

Aqua building starts upper $200's, Randolph street high rises are the same. The 777 building is on the cheap side, but you have no deck or balcony.

You get a spacious 1bedroom or a shoebox studio?

You drop the $20k for that garage parking space, or you use a parking lot?

You had a condo? How'd those monthly HOA fees look? Good buildings run $350+/month, easy.

You live downtown you pay premiums for everything.

I originally thought the OP was probably in Hyde Park thinking he was in Roseland, walking around like "Hmmm this isn't so bad"

Somewhere plottin
People forget that there are various different areas and neighborhoods in Chicago and the change of scenery in each area.

Chicago is huge! I currently reside up north in a yuppie neighborhood but the rent is ok, I'm only one train ride away from downtown (where I work) and there is virtually no violence in my area.

Plus its very diverse over here and there is a bunch of convenient stores, bars, clothing stores, etc just a few steps away from my apt. :ld:

Tons of growth and job opportunities in Chicago depending on what field you're in.

Cost of living is directly tied to local wages. It's cheaper than SF because the jobs pay less money. To make 80k plus in Chicago you need to be a seasoned engineer, tenured govt employee, or MBA Finance/Business honcho.
That's a rarity here.

IT analysts make ~80-90k with 5 years experience here, you got entry level guys pulling those numbers, straight out of school on the west coast.

The entire south side isn't bad. But I wouldn't even drive through some of the streets there.
