We invented this ish, and now we don't even like it....:dwillhuh:...but let Adele/Sam Smith do it and then we support them wholeheartedly with our $$$ and adulation. They clearly studied and are fans of Black music themselves......but we no longer are fans of.....ourselves.

Let Tyrese, Tank or whoever else do it and it's "too old sounding" or "boring". We disrespect our own over the silliest stuff. Had a white dude with a raspy voice sang Tyrese, "Shame" it'd been a hit song the world-over, and he'd get all sort of praise.....from Black people. And he might sound almost as good as Tyrese vocally, but we'll give him way more credit.

I mean, I get the white soul singer being a novelty...I get it.....AT FIRST, but 50-60 years in and the novelty has worn off. I'm not even saying they don't make good music, but it's no better than we are capable of and have done historically.

I don't dislike the auto-tune stuff, and I dont think every song needs to be a gospel-ballad vocal....but there's no balance for us. We have no appreciation for anything "different".

We've ALLOWED ourselves to be put in a box musically and are letting other ppl make BILLIONS of dollars doing what we invented/popularized. Something that comes natural to us from our heart/soul, is no longer cool.

We let the radio programmers turn us into sheep and tell us "singing isn't cool anymore.....playing an instrument is lame...writing good songs is passe....it's all about catchiness and nothing else" Meanwhile they were lulling us to sleep. Finessing us outta our own ish. :francis:

At this point, the only way it'll ever change is if urban radio FORCES real music back into the format. And they may lose alot of people initially, but over time people will adjust.

It's because as HipHop got bigger more and more got accustom to and only desire to hear HipHop

It's no different for the people on here. The majority of people here only listen to rap and complain about R&B not being what it use to be but no one would listen to it if it sound like it use to anyway

Rap got too big and started dominating the airwaves

We don't really support Adele and Sam Smith

Man I'm with you on this. Posted in the random thoughts thread 2 days ago that we need to get back to making music. Rap killed Rnb in a sense of rap became what spoke for blacks music wise and rnb followed suit by taking the rap sound cause that's what gets played on the radio. I bet half these new rnb dudes even know what a trumpet or saxophone look like in person.
To change it is artist have to go back to it and they have to not change their sound when they get theIr break. And labels have to allow them to make that music and they have to tell the radio to play it cause it's not like they don't tell them what to play anyway. People by brainwashing or whatever then love what's on the radio.
Ain't nothing like some good 60s-80s soul music :lawd: and even up to the 90s rnb was jamming. But since the 2000s it's been trash. It's hard to give this shyt a shot when I KNOW I can get some authentic al green, stevie, luther, marvin, etc
Matter fact fukk rnb I'm gon continue jamming to my oldies

Also Trey songz has said he would drop plenty of his traditional R&B songs but it's not what fans want to hear and those songs just don't cultivate black people 16-25 (tastemakers)

finally a sensible post from you on this matter :mjpls:

I don't think R&B has to go back to how it sounded in the 90's or 70's. Tht time has indeed passed. It just needs to be a clear progression where talent is still the vocal point and you can still incorporate small elements on what R&B once was.

I love synthesizers and all the computerized instruments.....but they need to be more than just 1 finger Fisher Price melodies. And that's where learning to play an instrument comes in.

I dont believe it's black people supporting these artistes.

They're white singers who make black music for white audiences :yeshrug:

No different to eminem

Adult Black women are huge Adele fans. All my cousin wanted from me this year was to buy her Adele's CD.
I don't think she's literally bought any music album in 2-3 YEARS.

You don't sell 7 million albums in several weeks without major crossover.

What these artist lack in vocal talent in live instruments they make up for in subject matter, song structure and just being more descriptive in their songs

I don't know how anyone can listen to " DONT" and not appreciate what's being done in that song that couldn't have been done in previous generations

Adele an exception because she has a lane all to herself and the machine behind her

She's like J Cole

You're right but there's more to it.

Black people definitely out here supporting the likes of Adele and others.

I'm convinced people eventually accept what ever is on the radio most times. People don't want to feel left out or alone in their tastes of culture. The group think effect.

Hell I remember an article I read on here that described experiments in regards to playing a song UNTIL people liked it. Hear it on the radio enough, most zombies will eventually come to...

That song is good, I like it personally....but it's too wordy breh, and filled with profanity.

Nobody on a LARGE scale, knows that song word-for-word. And that's why it's not a major hit.

It's never going back

I like the R&B now and how different it is compared to the 90s, 80s, etc.

I know it's not going back but I always find it funny that one of if not the biggest songs from last year was that uptown Saturday night song and it was a mix between the big band sound and some new school flavor. It meshed well. That song is what there needs to be more of.
And black artist should be doing it not that white dude.
