Yea I was thinking back to anime and manga from the 80-90s that depicted black characters with thick lips (most notably, Mr. Popo from Dragonball), but now that I think about it, Tenjou Tenge and Durarara! both had black characters depicted that way, so yea... That's Japan for ya.
