What exactly is your conception of god?
EXAMPLE:
One of the primary church founding fathers of Western Christianity; Saint Thomas Aquinas, specifically stated that god can't be physical ....(something about any physical item can be split in two thus destroyed and given "God" can't destroyed [per some quotation in the bible] "GOD" can then only be spiritual i.e. non physical. )
Those early church fathers were Neo-Platonist proto-scientist attempting to make the events of the bible both literal and rational. The materialist bent of science in it's methodology hadn't hit yet so these proto-scientist had no problem defining a thing as "spiritual", "metaphysical", etc.
Anyway, It's been a long time since I read it but the point is that different folks conceive of the entity referred to as "GOD" differently. In which case they would approach this question from wildly different assumptions than you or the next person.
SIDENOTE: this is one of the reasons why I laugh at atheist championing science over religion because it was the philosophical notions of their ideological forefathers which defined large chunks of the mechanizations of Christianity. As a result these type of atheist that talk like they are reprimanding irrational Christians when the christian ideas they rail against likely come from people who used similar philosophical approaches to knowledge creation as themselves.
