1A. Midnight Marauders (A masterpiece of hip-hop artistry....Award Tour, Electric Relaxation, Oh My God, Midnight, Keep It Rolling, God Lives Through, and of course, my all-time favorite hip hop song.....Lyrics To Go (production, timing, lyrics, the sample flip.....perfection. Q-Tip's highest level of quality production))
1B. The Low End Theory (My favorite album until they dropped MM....classic material. The emergence of Phife as a serious lyricist. Loved the guests - Diamond D, Brand Nubian, LONS....This was an event and still is. You can play it straight through still.)
3. People's Instinctive Travels (One of the best debuts in hip hop. Footprints still one of my favorite songs, that Donald Byrd sample and beat drop...Bonita Applebum...Push It Along...Rhythm (Devoted to the Art of Moving Butts)...Description Of A Fool (club version)....These were good times.)
4. Beats, Rhymes & Life (Dilla joined the Ummah and a new sound evolved for ATCQ, but it was their least cohesive album to that point. You could sense the tension. And I knew Phife was spending most of his time down here in ATL. Used to run into him all the time down here. Was cool peeps with everyone. RIP. Phony Rappers, Get A Hold, Jam (the end of Jam....I been there many times...), The Hop, 1nce Again, Stressed Out, Keeping It Moving. It still goes.)
5. The Love Movement (all over the place after the fire at Q-Tip's house destroyed all his music, and the group was pretty much done by the time this was re-recorded. Still had some joints on it. Find A Way, Give Me w. Nore, Steppin' It Up w. Busta and Redman, the posse cut at the end, The Love....)
Can't rate the new album. I'm still in the moment and am enjoying what hip hop used to sound like. I really appreciate the artistry of this album, De La Soul's and Common's latest efforts. They've restored the feeling.
