And that's the saddest part of this Kendrick, Drake, and J Cole thing.
J Coles story is a man coming to terms with his own mortality, and also his fans coming to terms with it. He's been working his ass off, but he doesn't have that dog in him.
Drake has it, but he's already dead to a real rapper. Dudes are saying he's just waiting, and maybe I'll be proven wrong this week, but let's be real. There is no world in which kendrick gets ethered by Drake.
Drake doesn't have the ability, and his ghost writers don't. They couldn't do it with Pusha T, and they for sure are not going to do it with Kendrick.
Even before this, Drake had an ESPN interview removed where he said Kendrick only makes music for his region, while he makes music for the world.
And I got to thinking, Jay-Z didn't have to deal with a top 3. He was going at it with Mobb Deep and the Dipset.
50 was getting chewed up by Jada.
The fact that this isn't happening now shows we're just wistful for an old era.
Let it go, it's over. It's probably never coming back.
I think J Cole still gets included in the top 3, because the idea that you have to murder your competition is outdated.
The apology he did will probably make him bigger, but he'll definitely have to pivot(or should) away from I'm the best, and just making deeper music
