Some people play themselves out though. Game just dropped an album that people still listen to. That nikka did that shyt to catch that Dom Kennedy and Nipsey Hussle wave. Wanted to keep his name bumbling.

I said that an hour ago. Illmatic and Paid in Full could been mixtapes and no one would pay attention. The likes of Cole, K Dot, Drake and even Wale played their cards right about mixtapes: drop one EXTREMELY great mixtape, drop a great album, and tour off of that for years to come. Then Drop albums sparingly so that your hardcore fanbase will BUY the album since they miss them so much.

If you do the Gucci Mane/ Yo Gotti way, you bound to flop with 20k first week sales. Oversaturating yourself to "feed the streets" will have your core fanbase not appreciate you, restricts you from touring overseas-where the real $$$ is, and have you pass on in a few years. Lil Wayne was one in a billion cases where oversaturation equals commercial success. Too many people copied Wayne's blueprint and are suffering outside of the underground circuit.

Your legacy is on the line when you drop ALBUMS. Be a Ice Cube, Nas, Jigga, Scarface. Don't be a LOX where you have a million classic tracks on mixtapes and classic freestyles, but have lukeworm albums, which also harmed their legacy by not being mentioned among the legends.
wale dropped a good 6-7 mixtapes

cole dropped, come up, warm up, friday night lights, truly yours 1 and 2

drake dropped about 3 mixtapes

and kendrick dropped the like 2/3

gucci and gotti fanbase will never buy music so it dont matter regardless

it all comes down to clearing them samples and having control over the content you want your fans to hear

All I see are rappers left and right putting out mixtapes weekly, just oversaturating the market
You got established artists in Hip Hop on their 15th mixtape like nikka :wtf:
Theres no need to bombard fans with all that materials. In my opinion, that is whats killing Hip Hop

Rappers focus so much on their mixtapes, got bangers on it, that their albums be ass. Sounding like the album songs is an afterthought. All that hot material used on their mixtapes could have been used on an album, to cement your legacy, but instead used on a tape that nikkas would forget in 4 months :russ:

Just like in the 80s and 90s. Rappers would put out an album, and wait a year or two to release another album. From that, they can focus on the best songs they got, and put it all on one album, which makes CLASSICS

Just look at these songs (Which were on a mixtape)

:wow:

:wow:

nikkas shyt on J-Cole, but at least he knows whats up. Don't put out material a while, be on a couple features and be out. LET YOUR FANS MISS YOU. Putting out material every 2 months can get annoying. Rappers today acting like thirsty nikkas feenin over a girl , getting all worried cause their fans didn't talk about them for an hour :sadbron:

nikkas waisting all this classic material on free handouts

Watch, rappers gonna be on their 25th mixtape, wondering why their fans got tired of them :heh:

I hope u know that rappers are not in charge with the album releases. That why people keep leaving Dr.dre because Dr.dre kept putting his artists in the closet. U can drop a mixtape whenever and nikka do eat off mixtapes

And the is another thing why i love mixtapes. Rappers would have a lot of materal before even having an album out.

Kendrick Lamar fans gets to enjoy Section 80, O.D., E.P. C4, and Compton State of Mind before even having a chance to purchase gkmd

A fan that was set in 1994 even after Illmatic released can only play the 10 tracks that were in Illmatic and the 3 or 4 guess verses he had on other album

Mixtapes should only be used to get started.

at this point, mixtapes and albums are pretty much the same thing. the real artists like Ab-Soul, KRIT, etc that put out "mix tapes" like Control System and King Remembered In Time are really albums. there are still those wack ass mixtapes where it's justa bunch of songs or it has "DJ" yelling shyt all over it but they are usually from artists that drop albums like that anyway

They dropped the most albums when they were starting out. After they have successful albums, they slowed it down, or outright stop dropping mixtapes. Like they should.

Rappers need to stop doing a lot of things, and putting out so much music is one thing. It's created this add generation of listeners that don't know how to actually enjoy something for a longer period than a month and instead are always looking for something "new"..it's like with every mix-tape or release that drops, it's only a temporary listen to "hold us over" until something else drops.

the internet and the accessibility of music has ruined the ability of most "listeners" to really enjoy music

i remember back in the days when rappers dropped one album every 1- 2yrs had nikkas feining :lupe:for they next single...and then feeling :ahh: when a new video came out from that album...the videos and singles kept us feed until the next album release...now nikkas dropping a lot of music constantly...not that i have a problem with that
