Exactly. There's no reason to claim Chicago if you live in the burbs, to people in the city. But if you're in Cook County, there's no reason not to claim Chicago to out of towners. It's pretty much the same place. You just live right outside of city limits.

Now if you are way out in Joliet or Elgin, that's a different story.

Very few people that claim Miami grew up in city limits (including myself). Dudes are from Opa Locka/Carol City/North Miami/Miami Springs/Coral Gables/Perrine/Richmond Heights etc.

Baltimore is another major city. Lawrenceville is a town. Its easier to just say they are from ATL then Lawrenceville, Georgia so all their fans dont have to bust out a map just to see they are from the suburbs of Atlanta.
