this is where google-style research backfires. youre just looking up random numbers & stats with no type of background informatio, which leaves you with no real understanding and no sense of perspective.

youre from the bay area, so surely you know that the bay has the most supportive local fanbase ever, right? alot of those guys were going platinum in the '90s without blowing up much, thanks to that support.

rappin-4-tay was no bigger than dudes like dru down and richie rich.

my man celly cel came out the gate platinum, and im like his only fan up here.

most these dudes can walk down blocks in other parts of the country and nobody will know that theyre successful rappers. and for the record, i liked most of that '90s bay ish. im on rappin-4-tay's side.

Facts.

Like I said he was pretty obscure even in his own time, which makes the shyt that much more offensive.

Now i'll admit that I had no idea how long the song had been out or any of that, and it seems like now that this is a "thing" drake will do his little obligatory nod or whatever, but had nobody spoke up, if 4-tay hadn't said shyt this would be just be a blatant lift.

And the funny shyt is I see why he does it, since people don't really respect him on that tip, he want's to show that he's a "head" like he didn't catch on to this shyt kinda late.

He was on a hugely popular album and on a single that was #4 on the Hip Hop charts.

I love how @Wacky_D comes off as a hip hop scholar but ALWAYS tries to down play the Westcoast "chit" as if he didn't know about it. Infinitely knowledgeable on the color sneakers Cold Crush wore but guys on albums that sold 8 million? Nah.

:russ: @ a "obscure regional rap song" being a top 40 pop hit in 1994... There wasn't a goddamn thing obscure nor regional bout playaz club. ..it's a seminal west coast classic that dropped during a time when the west ran hip hop...I grew up like 1000 miles from the bay and heard this shyt on the radio and watched the video on the Box everyday for the better part of a year

what the hell are you talking about?

i was a west coast fanatic in the '90s. i rode with the west more than anything. and i rocked with rappin 4-tay.

i know you like to wave your west coast flag, but how you gonna try to come at my neck?

once again you show your ass, as expected.

youre synonymous with the chit i was saying earlier.

i agree that "obscure" isnt the word that i would use tho.

Im not even coming at your neck but this is another thread discussing the westcoast where you downplaying certain artists for a reason I can't quite grasp.

Rappin 4 Tay was much bigger outside of the Bay Area than Dru Down. Playaz Club was a huge song. Only God Can Judge me was a huge song. I don't see how he can be cast aside as some rapper no one really heard of outside of Oakland.

im not downplaying anything. youre just taking it that way. for example, i didnt say anything like the bolded. youre arguing with yourself here.

hes bigger outside of the bay area where? in other parts of the west coast? im not saying that he didnt have a lil bit more success than dru down, but theyre both in the same batch.

an example of a huge song out of the bay from that time period(not counting pac) is "i got 5 on it". huge hit across the board. rappin-4-tay is an answer to a trivia question in many cities. thats not to downplay dude. and its not a knock on him either. its a fact.

You could ask 100 people and 95 of them wouldn't know Dru Down was on that song so you can't use that. On top of all that, you realize that is charted at the same spot 'Only God Can Judge Me Now' and 5x as many people own the album it was on than Operation Stakola?

Rappin 4 Tay is not only bigger in the Bay but the bigger artist all around.
