Aretha smoked cigarettes. Amazing how her voice held up.

El debarge was on crack and never lost his voice, neither did chaka, I wonder what she did that caused her to lose her voice.

Actually after 1980 Aretha's vocals did take a hit, and she had to stop smoking cigs, whitney was a chain smoker too

I didn't vote. But she is a 10. Her vocal ability has basically set the modern standard for the female voice in American music. Mastery of pitch, tone, breath control all of it. She has charted in every genre of popular music.
