Having the game on ESPN has done nothing good for its ratings. They've hovered around the 15-17 ratings number since they started covering the games.

I don't really care about any of that I'm just pointing out the fact that you can't compare the numbers

It's because they need to keep as much "premium" product on ESPN as possible to justify subscription charges - whereas network is wholly advertising-supported, cable is a hybrid of advertising revenue and subscriber fees. The more marquee sporting events that are on cable, the less likely subscribers are to cut the cord.
