Michigan, Texas, Ohio State and Notre Dame have the biggest fan bases in cfb so it's no coincidence that if none of those teams aren't in, the numbers won't be there.
Makes sense, but it's not like ESPN is some standalone premium channel like HBOIt's because they need to keep as much "premium" product on ESPN as possible to justify subscription charges - whereas network is wholly advertising-supported, cable is a hybrid of advertising revenue and subscriber fees. The more marquee sporting events that are on cable, the less likely subscribers are to cut the cord.
ABC has to get views and subscriptions on ESPN due to its high operating cost.I'm still unsure why they don't air it on ABC

Aren't they included with any basic cable package?
they command like 6 bucks a month from every cable provider per subscriber. dropping a game like this which is a tentpole and guaranteed a large ratings number compared to what they usually draw is probably a decent percentage of that chunkMakes sense, but it's not like ESPN is some standalone premium channel like HBO

Ohio State has a huge fanbase. Probably bigger than Bama and Clemson combined.
