Had to fly for the first time 2 days ago in a few months, actually didn't think the Real ID was legit because they been saying it was coming for decades. Added 30 minutes to TSA bullshyt. Don't know what's different... I carry my passport until I can apply and get this done.

turns out I've had real ID since 2011, use to use it to cross over to canada without taking my passport
To fly domestically, yes, your state ID is useless.
