depends on the area. In some low cost of living state like West Virginia or Mississippi, $42k is solidly lower middle class, which is part of the middle class subset.

Low cost of living doesn’t necessarily mean poor, it just means input costs are low.

and education requirements are irrelevant if you’re white. White high school drop outs have similar employment outcomes to blacks with college degrees.
