Nah, he was very popular when the Hard Knock Life album came out, he was popular at that time like how popular Future is in current day.

Beyonce did make him this larger than life crossover star he is today though :ehh:

Future barely does volume one platinum numbers in its original sales envelope.
He is in no way at all as popular as jayz was.
at jay's height via pop permeation in music or in connection to his wife beyounce.

Illmatic took even longer, going Platinum on December 11, 2001

Bet you won't try to downplay that one though.

Illmatic was the cultural submission album of the mid nineties.
It was never given its distinction as a classic from sales or people outside the culture's perception.
Most these nikkaz flodge'n as nas fans and did not know about nas.
till he was on MTV with Lauren hill selling out with whodini beats trying to be a fake dealer.

Originally freeze priority and rocafella only negotiated to have a 500k first print run of rd

Which is why anyone saying they an original jay fan may be a liar. if they don't own the first print of rd.
Since jay flopped so badly when he went full on jiggy on vol I.
They never reprinted it till he finally blew.

This is true. I had RD on CD back in 96. Ended up breaking it by accident and couldn't find it ANYWHERE until years later.

Very true, he was buzzing heavy on mixtapes in summer of 95 in NY, that's when I caught wind. I don't even think I bought the cd, just copied my boys onto cassette tape before burning a copy.

it still was an underground hip hop classic, regardless of sales.

There is nuffin underground about an album.
which contained a lead single for a movie breh.
Jay revised history for his rating, based on jiggy commercialism.
Plus, sentiment from gateway puff fans and over emotional loss of big fans.

It's funny how Jay literally forced people to see RD as a classic
How the fukk can anyone force people to consider something a classic?
Ilmatic wasn't a classic cause it didn't go plat until 2001? OB4CL not a classic cause it didn't go plat?

5 mics by some dweebs written by 19 year old Asians at Harvard jews magazines is not the only metric for a classic.

i know guys like Kool G Rap & Big Daddy Kane made albums similar to Reasonable Doubt before Jay but he pulled it off good. i'm just saying sales don't mean anything.
