man, this is a throwback... i was on the nas bbs from 01-04 probably, when i was a young teen-- it's crazy people are still around and talking about it. i went by the handle i'm using now, but doubt anyone remembers cause i was more involved in the political/religious/social debates that would go down with van gogh, 24scientists, yahmi, and a handful of others, and would sit back and watch the craziness that went down with the 9-5 crew. you're all bringing stuff up that i hadn't thought about in over a decade. good times, those were my formative years right there...

wow I remember you

you were that young smart white kid right that used to get in debates with 24scientists and etc

You were young as hell back then I believe. Not even in your late teens, but early teens I believe

I even send you a few pm's back then asking for your take on things

I was first lurking on that site in 01 when I discovered the site when I bought Stillmatic I believe

signed up a year later

Went by the name "Workin Woodwheel" and I think I had a other name too but I forgot

damn, yeah i remember you!

but yes, that was me.. i was 13-14 at the time.. i kept my age/race quiet for a while cause i thought people wouldn't take me seriously haha.. but that board taught me more about debate and writing than anything i learned in school before or after-- as other people already mentioned, you had to think carefully before you pressed post. there were some highly intelligent, hilarious, creative people on there that would light you up if you didn't come correct.

and yeah, same deal with me.. i bought the stillmatic album, saw the website in the booklet and lurked for about the first year as well-- then started posting daily. never had another name other than this one. i left the board after they overhauled the whole sony bbs system the first or second time-- sometime after streets disciple became the banner head. checking that forum was a major part of my late middle school/early high school life though-- and my hip hop connoisseurship was unparalleled in high school because of it hah.

good to see some of you are still around though-- this is a trip..

yeah I remember you always used to give it up to the board

I vaguely remember you always talking about how you learned allot from that board

it's a interesting dichotomy when you think about...on one hand you have, you have a super young white kid,

and one the other hand, you had staunch 5 Percenters on the board for example lol

and we would all mesh and debate and etc....

I think one of the reasons why the Nas board was so interesting and diverse is because Nas himself is interesting and diverse

Nas is a multi-faceted rapper....Intelligent, Ignorant, Knowledgable, Playful and etc...

So naturally his fans came from many different circles of life

yeah, i definitely agree. being a young white kid (maybe even the youngest regular poster then) with limited exposure to different cultures at the time, the board was a place where i could connect with people i probably never would have otherwise-- and the common thread we all shared was nas/hip hop.

i know i was personally fascinated by the whole NOI/5% culture since they were the ones most often getting involved in the debates (plus the ideological undercurrents in nas' music), and i wanted to engage them and see why they thought the way they did. i think once they realized how young i was and that i had no particular indoctrination, the defensive posture broke down and i could have real conversations with them. 24scientists was a prime example of that-- he and i stayed in touch for a bit after we both left the board, and he was one of the most staunch (and intelligent) 5%ers there.

and that all speaks to your point-- in general the board was a great melting pot, proving ground, joke factory and all-around fun community to be a part of, and i definitely see that as a reflection of the different personalities/ideological templates that are attracted to nas' music.
