nikkas in this thread rewriting history as always, a prime DJ Khaled isn't giving Cam a bag to buy out the contract of a nikka who is Red Cafe status

xxl-freshman-2010-cover-2.jpg

This is regarded as probably the greatest freshman cover ever. I VIVIDLY remember there being outrage about Vado not being included in it so much so to the point that XXL had to do damage control by including him in their freshmen concert and had him headline with Cam. I’m not saying the nikka had a massive buzz but that Boss of All Bosses mixtape series was a staple in the streets, Stop It 5 was a street hit and that became common slang. He made people start saying “slime” again(yes I know nore said it first 10 years prior but it wasn’t common slang till Vado came out). And he had everybody wearing Rugby. Plus Speaking Tungs, We All Up In Here, and Hey Muma was on regular rotation on NYC radio. Cardi B herself even cited Hey Muma as her inspiration for that coach bag line on her last song, that song was big in the city in 2011 which was her high school years.

And it could've very well been a regional thing that didn't reach past the tri-state area.. but it was a thing nonetheless.

It was obviously a brief time and he fumbled his moment by doing dumb shyt and going to Khaled, but he 100% did look like a promising prospect. ASAP Rocky kinda came outta nowhere and passed him by in late 2011 and snatched young Harlem from him and never looked back tho
He is/was nice and deserved to be part of that cover. I thought signing to Khaled was a good move because he was dropping albums when Cam was starting to slow down. Khaled just never really found or gave him a lane. I don't think he was even getting regular features on Khaled albums. Kay Slay (RIP) told him on the radio that Khaled wasn't doing as much as he should. Vado has/had the talent and dropped a ton of mixtapes. It's crazy how things panned out for NY mixtape rappers of that time. Maino and Uncle Murda were not the two that I expected to still be relevant in 2024.

Too many NY rappers used to act like you could just be a good spitta back in the days and blow up. :mjlol:

The thing was that their predecessors either like changed music, made crazy bangers or even pop hits. While then you had the lazy “I’m just gonna rap like I’m doing a freestyle over a generic beat, with the same flow and delivery dudes heard a thousand times” :unimpressed:

But personally I fukked with those Boss of all bosses tapes. I could easily hear that it was niche type of music though

DJ Khaled:

"This is my new signee...the hottest in the game right now..from Harlem NY...VADO!!

:gladbron:

"And over here is my OTHER new signee...the hottest from Jamaica...MAVADO!!"

:gladbron:

This is how I remember him introducing them Nyggas on Rap city one day...even back then I was like "oh, this is a bad idea"
