Republican Calls Climate Change A Hoax Because Earth And Mars Have 'Exactly' Same Temperature


A coal plant-owning Kentucky Republican offered an out-of-this-world argument against new EPA carbon emissions regulations.

State Sen. Brandon Smith (R-Hazard) joined other lawmakers in attacking the Obama administration and EPA regulations July 2 in a meeting of the Interim Joint Committee on Natural Resources and Environment.

“I won’t get into the debate about climate change,” Smith said. “But I’ll simply point out that I think in academia we all agree that the temperature on Mars is exactly as it is here. Nobody will dispute that. Yet there are no coal mines on Mars. There’s no factories on Mars that I’m aware of.”



While there are no known coal mines or factories on Mars, the average temperature on Mars is significantly colder than here on Earth.

The average temperature on Earth is about 57 degrees Fahrenheit, while the average temperature on Mars is about -81 degrees Fahrenheit.

Smith, who has been elected to the Kentucky Senate twice and elected four times to the state House, was joined by other lawmakers who questioned the science behind climate change.

“All this stems, this carbon capture, all this other stuff, it stems back to a scare, generated years ago about global warming,” said state Rep. Stan Lee (R-Fayette County). “Finally it turned out there hasn’t been global warming in 15 or 20 years, then they changed the name to climate change.”

Another lawmaker said the extinction of the dinosaurs proved that climate change was not caused by humans.

“The dinosaurs died, and we don’t know why, but the world adjusted, and to say that this is what’s going to cause detriment to people, I just don’t think it’s out there,” said state Rep. Kevin Sinnette (D-Ashland).

Even outside of politics, it's depressing that some of the most powerful people on the planet, who make important decisions about the future of the country (and world) are this dumb.


I mean, even when I was like an eight-year old I could've told you that Mars is obviously further away from the sun than earth and much colder.

planetary temperature has more to do with atmosphere than the distance from the sun and mars DID have a temperature and atmosphere very similar to earths, the evidence to show that is irrefutable..

also the amount of contradictions in our own solar system over the last 30 years should show you something isnt right..

climate change is basically being sold as our fault by some.. whereas its a combo of natural earth phenomena and a byproduct of this overindustrialised system..

However every time some poor kids in indonesia die in a factory collapse its swept under the carpet.. everytime an earthquake is caused by fracking they move to another site.. but now i gotta seperate my cans and plastics just because of the bullshyt they insist on pumping into the air? thats a good question.. as much as i like to balance my sources i would have to lean to nasas explanation as they have been pressured by evidence into their claim..

IF the seasons relied soleley on distance then why does summer in the northern hemisphere occur when we are furthest from the sun and winter when we are closest?

We have only recently (for our civilization) discovered something that ancient tribes have had records of and current indeginous tribes such as the dogons of africa knew all along.. that the earth has a wobble which was caused by ancient impact.. this axial precession is widely believed to be the only possible cause of the seasons

how does the different time of arrival for the rays lead to varying temperatures? given the curvature of the earth what would you say is the discrepancy in time of arrival of said rays?
