Derailment? WTF?!?

Man you need to fall back with that.

This thread was about religion DE FACTO...so what are you complaining about????

1. Reza Aslan is a charlatan...at best a fraud

2. Bill Maher had legitimate criticisms of muslim communities in the modern world

Whats the problem here?

Ya'll dudes get scared to debate when some people don't capitulate to calls to "back down"
Bro, don't ever tell me to fall back on anything that is explicitly in the rules. If you read them you would know that to combat thread derailment we gave the OP the leverage to decide how they want their thread to go--meaning if they want it to just be about the topic in the OP then that's what it will be. @Mephistopheles is the OP therefore he gets that privilege and you were ranting about shyt that was general. It's basically the Slaimon provision. If you're opinion has nothing to do with the topic in question and people justifiably feel like you're derailing the thread, then :camby:.

Man, you really missed out on about 5 decades of anti-Soviet and anti-Communist propaganda.

communism was an existential threat to capitalism and the American way of life. And China and other ethnic nations were communist too. My point still stands tho

Certainly those factors are significant, but to say "that's it" in attempting to understand humanity is, quite literally, a minimalist approach.

Were the European wars of religion devoid of religious motivations? No. Were the heavily influenced by social, economic, and political factors as well? Yes. Should one consider all those factors when trying to understand those events? I think so...

Reza Aslan is not the ultimate authority on these issues, nor is he to be completely disregarded simply because he is a theologian. If you disregard him for other reasons then cool, thats your choice. But to say that he's useless based solely on the fact that he's a theologian is flawed logic....in my opinion.
Plus he's not simply a "theologian," he's a religious historian. He has a Ph.D in Sociology with a religious emphasis. He's an academic with an education in the history of and sociological influence of Abrahamic religion. He's not a clergyman.

I don't know you're wasting time arguing with Napoleon though. You might as well try to potty train a hermit crab.

HL could use a lesson in respectfully disagreeing. Lot of smart dudes here, but lazy posting makes it difficult to navigate.

Also, smilies should be banned from HL.

Then YOU need to read the rules then read my posts.

I've done nothing to derail the thread BUT stay on topic with every post. If you don't like my posts, then thats on you. Let me know where you had to do that.

Reza Aslan has no legitimate arguments. I explain why. AND I explain why Mahers comments are appropriate.

ANd i've done this in EVERY thread reply.

So yeah, you should seriously check whatever axe you have to grind.

Fam.

This guy wrote a book on what jesus "might mean" to christians...from a muslim perspective.

Thats a red-flag right there.

He's not playing historian.

He's playing historical fiction.

Its no better than what what Phillip Roth did in Plot Against America: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Plot_Against_America

Except Aslan wants to push his "story" (cause thats all it truly is) as some sort of legitimate and plausible (this is what happens when you deal with religious dummies) series of events in jesus' life.

AND the bigger flaw is that Aslan IS A MUSLIM...so theres nothing this guy can truly say to introduce an appreciation for the jesus character because at the end of the day, christians will always revere jesus more than Aslan...a former christian himself :dead:

I have no interest in continuing this conversation with you. but I'd be more than willing to discuss this issue with a poster that isn't a dimwit.
Deflect, deflect, deflect. You wouldn't be willing to discuss it with anyone because you're a moron. YOU said the "liberal media" doesn't cover women's rights issues in Somalia and Pakistan. Who is this mysterious "liberal media" you speak of?

It will be hilarious if you say MSNBC.
