Even an atheist needs to acknowledge the importance of religion in understanding human history, and the world today. You may not believe in these faiths, but you can't deny that for the vast majority of human history to the present day most of humanity has/does believe, and their actions were/are informed by those beliefs. A theologian, therefor, has a valid expertise that needs to be acknowledged.
To just pass religion off as silly fairy tales, and those who believe as irrelevant because of those beliefs is to ignore one of the most consistent forces in human development.
Agreed, but if there was a significant population of classical Greek polytheists living and influencing world events today, then it would be logical to consult the expert on classical Greek polytheism to better understand them.True enough but no one is asking someone who studies Zeus or Odin to come partake in using Greek or Nordic Mythology as means to govern or establish laws. Those were at times followed as legitimate belief systems as well. There has to be a line drawn somewhere.

Religions are failed sciences. They were attempts at figuring out things with some political structure mixed in.True enough but no one is asking someone who studies Zeus or Odin to come partake in using Greek or Nordic Mythology as means to govern or establish laws. It seems like your'e taking this "hard-line" atheist position beyond logic. You don't have to believe in a religion to recognize that others do, and to understand that religion is to understand them better.No.
Cultural movements is one thing.
Religion will never get a pass.

The "Levant" is best understood as the fall of the ottoman empire and the struggle for control of its resources...with a repressive nature of islam mixed in as a means of leveraging socio-political order
Thats it.
Certainly those factors are significant, but to say "that's it" in attempting to understand humanity is, quite literally, a minimalist approach.

This is the sort of insulting shyt i'm talking about though. Were the European wars of religion devoid of religious motivations? No. Were the heavily influenced by social, economic, and political factors as well? Yes. Should one consider all those factors when trying to understand those events? I think so...
In my view, if you claim to be a theologian, I immediately have a crisis of confidence in you.Reza Aslan is not the ultimate authority on these issues, nor is he to be completely disregarded simply because he is a theologian.
If you disregard him for other reasons then cool, thats your choice. But to say that he's useless based solely on the fact that he's a theologian is flawed logic....in my opinion.

I'd like to hear your opinions on pokemon masters and their sociopolitical role in the history of western civilization![]()
to even know), I would consult a pokemon expert. Its beneath me.
If I was researching Asian teenagers (or whoever the fukk likes pokemon, I'm tooto even know), I would consult a pokemon expert.
And a theologian is simply a person who engages or is an expert in theology. You can be an atheist theologian.
