Look at the CNN bit in the OP. He tries to charm and dance his way out of having to address anything directly by claiming that arguments are too general then saying they're not completely accurate therefore they're entirely flawed.

I think Liberal criticism of Islam is muted because criticism and hatred of Islam is linked closely with xenophobia in the West. It feels uneasy to shyt on Muslims as a whole because that would mean you are giving implicit support to racist scumbags who hate anything that is not white Christian America.

But truth be told, southern states which are more religious, are on average not as socially progressive the more secular parts of the country. Scandinavian states are more progressive than the more religious United States etc. In short, religion fukks up almost everything.

shytting on Christians is easy because it's almost always not based on race. shytting on Muslims is a bit tricker cause there are just so many xenophobes doing that already and progressives don't want to be lumped in with that group.

maher is right that some liberals have the impulse to bend over backwards for muslims who are doing things we otherwwise would never defend because we are concerned with them being singled out and harmed in america, but in the grand scheme of things, being too soft on a minority group is really not a big deal. the truth is maher is a zionist and he begins to lose his intellectual honesty when discussing the middle east.
