It's never too late man

I use to make beats for fun as a kid but ended up video directing and marketing but I work with a lot of artists (I regret not taking it serious too) but my cousin is the same age as you and does it as a hobby and it's amazing how much he's progressed within a year.

I'm not saying to start selling mixtapes on the street:whoa: But if you have the knowledge and connections, it could be another hobby to add to the list
I guess if you aren't trying to be a star age doesn't really matter if you're just working on music. I've also watched a lot of really good producers make a lot of beats. Not that it translates, but I've helped a little here and there and I don't think I have the worst ear. It might be worth playing with.

You're giving me a lot to think about. Maybe I should just do it for me and try to enjoy it, and see what happens.

Thank you man! I appreciate it. Daps/reps.

I think it's because Rapsody is a woman also, and one that isn't out there selling sex. Her raps at the end of this Rhythm Roulette were great. What's crazy is she's released a LOT of music consistently since 2010 too. She dropped 5 "FreEPs" which are all 14-20 song projects with original production from the Soul Council (so they're actually LPs IMO) , 2 EPs, and 1 "official" LP.

Just for the hell of it I counted up the joints 9th Wonder produced for her and the ones he produced for Little Brother about a year ago, and Rapsody has a solid bit more 9th beats than Little Brother used.

If anyone wants to get into Rapsody, IMO her best project is the Beauty & the Beast EP from 2014, and then the She Got Game and For Everything "mixtapes/FreEPs" or whatever you wanna call them. Her "official album" The Idea of Beautiful is actually my least favorite project she's released.

I always wondered if that "random" selection bit was some bullshyt. now i'm like :patrice:
I think it's random for the most part. You can tell certain producers are heated at the batches they get (see 88 Keys, who was angry and phoned it in...and Cardiak, who "still wants a do-over").

Just Blaze is just the kind of dude I could see not wanting to do a whole beat from scratch in front of a big audience like that in that dumb Sprite Corner format. Either that or that Sprite footage is really old and the Instagram footage was him working on it later.

Others you can see using the system, I guess? I mean 9th Wonder obviously knew where the Soul section was of his record store and picked records from there. If he'd ended up in the heavy metal section I doubt the beats would have been as dope, although 9th does "weird" beats better than he gets credit for.

I do think most of the Rhythm Roulette videos are real.

I love 9th, a lot, but Just Blaze with this sample would be incredible

Plus Jamla's shyt is quiet/muffled in it's final mix and master.

Not just here and there, but every project.

Bright Lady's main monitors must not be too acoustically sound because nothing that's ever come out of there is loud or clear enough :francis:

Yeah man Just Blaze flipping that sample would be crazy.

I'd actually argue that Jamla has some great sounding mixes...but....some awful ones too. Some really bad ones are That Big Remo project you have in your post, that Away team album Scars & Stripes, For Everything and Thank HER Now by Rapsody are pretty bad.

But then some like Big Remo's Sleepwalkers is really good. So is his Entrapment album. Mansa Musa from Halo and Rated Oakland from GQ are good. Jamla is the Squad had a good mix.

And Khrysis mixes everything that comes out of Bright Lady Studios. So I'm not really sure what's going on over there, because like you said, some mixes are awful but there are other projects that sound really good.

Other times it changes up from beat to beat. Act Proof's Talented Tenth was a good example of that. Some songs you have to turn way loud to hear and then the next song blows your fukking ears off.
:mindblown:

I rep Jamla hard on this board but the discrepancy in their mixes have always had me really confused.

:mjcry:Nah man.

Feels like a missed opportunity. From 03-07 I worked with 9th and Khrysis' manager during the Justus League/Little Brother/Hall of Justus days and I spent a lot of time in those studios and lived with Khrysis for a bit, so I was around it. I grew up playing the drums, and I did some A&R stuff, but I never got into actual beatmaking or producing on my own. Starting back then I've always just been very into that whole beatmaking/producing culture, and I've made a few beats on other people's machines over the years, but I've never invested a lot of time into it. Now I just turned 31 and I have a pretty full plate with a career and hobbies too, so I really do regret never diving into it.

So being a huge LB fan (Phonte easily my favorite artist of the last 10 years) what stories can you share?

Stil probably the best live shows I have been to.

Kanye West's behavior when he and Consequence and LB recorded I See Now was crazy and has been commented on a lot from Phonte and others. Sean Price recording the majority of Jesus Price Superstar down here is my favorite memory of those days. He was every bit as funny/charismatic and down to earth as people say he was. Seeing Phonte write verses in his head like Jay-Z was always pretty cool. The office and studio were in the same building, so sometimes you'd walk in and just be surprised by someone there. At various points I'd walk in and randomly bump into Rock, Sean Price, Evidence, Jean Grae...you'd never know who would be in there. Skyzoo came into town in 2005 and played a few beats in my car to write songs because he liked the speakers. That was pretty cool. I remember Buckshot being surprised when he found out how slack the gun laws were in NC compared to NY and was bugging out when hearing about how easy it was to buy a pistol here. It's hard to think of anything real specific that isn't private.

General conversations was probably the best part. Obviously there were a lot of talented and interesting people around, so "water cooler" talk about music/movies/politics in general were probably my favorite memories. There aren't a ton of huge stories really. It's just a lot of memories and small events that add up.

Just the amount of knowledge that you've dropped on us over the years about beatmaking...you're already making beats in a sense. It's like you've already done an extensive amount of research is what I mean. You've been around producers. You've soaked up shyt and probably don't even realize it.

Just say fukk it...cop whatever it is that people use to make beats...start with just an hour a week...make one beat a week...something like that. :salute:
